Thousands of angry protestors including the families of dead US soldiers marched in Washington.
At least 190 anti-war demonstrators have been arrested on the steps of the Capitol when they jumped barriers around the base of the building.

Several thousand anti-war demonstrators marched through downtown Washington, clashing with police at the foot of the Capitol steps.

Among the crowd were war veterans and relatives of servicemen killed in Iraq.

The day's events began in front of the White House with a rally that included a man dressed in a Santa Claus outfit holding a sign that read "Coal for Bush and Cheney," a fake coffin for a fallen Marine and several speakers, including former presidential candidate Ralph Nader, anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan and former Attorney General Ramsey Clark.

Their numbers stretched for blocks along Pennsylvania Avenue, and they held banners and signs and chanted, "What do we want? Troops out. When do we want it? Now.''

Army veteran Justin Cliburn, 25, was among a contingent of Iraq veterans in attendance. "We're occupying a people who do not want us there,'' Cliburn said of Iraq." We're here to show that it isn't just a bunch of old hippies from the 60s who are against this war.''
Anti-war demonstrator lie on the ground as they participate in a 'die-in'.

A group called Iraqi Veterans against the War, organized a mass "die-in" in front of the Capitol to memorialize the Iraqis and American soldiers who have died since the invasion.

A smaller group who support the president and the war conducted a counter-demonstration, leading to some heated confrontations.

Counter-protesters lined the sidewalks behind metal barricades. There were some heated shouting matches between the two sides.

According to the latest opinion polls, well over half the US population believes the war in Iraq was a mistake.

4. Why was the Capital barricaded?
Considering we own the place. Maybe I'm just naive but is it legal to keep citizens off the Capital steps?

5. Why aren't Americans FREE to walk on their own Capitol's grounds?

U.S. Capitol Police officers form a human barricade
to stop anti-war demonstrators from crossing onto Capito
grounds, Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, in Washington. At least
150 protesters were arrested Saturday as thousands
of demonstrators marched to the Capitol demanding
an end to the Iraq war.

Is this becoming a police state? Do "they" really hate us for our "freedoms?" What "freedoms?"

6. It was a very intense day
We have pictures of the police coming down the steps of the capital very heavily armed.

Seeing the Iraq veterans there in force was incredibly moving and when they all laid down it brought tears to my eyes.

There were only a few scuffles that I saw at the front of the march. The counter-protesters just screamed hateful racist crap for the most part and frankly, there weren't all that many of them. We just walked past them without a second glance.
