CHILLING CONTEMPLATIONS
Last week the president gave a speech. Normally I'd have passed on it, preferring, instead, to read the transcript; wadding up a piece of paper in anger is a whole lot cheaper than pitching a rock through the television. But they said the speech would only last about 17 minutes, so I decided to endure it.

When the screen went to the president, he spent several seconds staring blankly and blinking into the camera while he waited for his cue. Those few seconds, it turns out, comprised the only moment of truth in the entire speech.

Not surprisingly the blogosphere took the speech apart fib by fib. What was surprising was the degree to which the mainstream media at least acknowledged the existence of many "inaccuracies" and outright prevarications delivered by the president. So, they warrant no repetition here.

But the speech did compel the contemplation of what drives the man. Like others, I have wondered if he's still sneaking off for a nip or two when he thinks no one is looking. And some have postulated that he may have some sort of congenital disorder that separates him from reality and makes him utterly indifferent to the pain he causes in the lives of millions. Is he incompetent? Does he really, truly believe that we are too stupid to notice when we're being lied to? Is he insane? Delusional? Or is he merely the absolute exemplification of unbridled greed, unfettered by even the smallest hint of conscience?

Saddest of all is the reality that Americans even have such musings about their head of state. There are no good answers for the things he says and does, especially since nobody still believes that he is acting out of high-minded Christian principle. He is, simply, what we're stuck with.

And that leads to another contemplation. Following his speech the Democratic congress delivered a response that was searingly tepid. A legitimate ballot-box mandate propelled Democrats into the majority in both houses, and the hope that energized that mandate has been thrown in our faces. Congress is supposed to work for US, but this congress continues the prior practice of ignoring US in order to accommodate a president who quite clearly doesn't give a damn about any of US.

We need a president who doesn't make us wonder what we have done to deserve such maladministration. We need a Congress that works on behalf of American citizens instead of cowering in the presence of malfeasance and outright treason. We need representation that hears US.

Instead of standing with a failed president, Congress should be standing with the people who put them in office. And the reasons for their failure to do so are beyond contemplation.
