Clark: "Dreams don't have to end."

Clark was live-blogging with supporters on his website from Clinton headquarters in Virginia today. Here are some excerpts. Edit: All are responses to bloggers and "off the cuff," so to speak.


"As for my role and voice, just stick with me...we're going to do what we can to help, and that's what's important. This isn't personal for me, it's about the country. I am not looking for a position, I am looking to help the country, and we're in the process of doing that, you and I and all the others on this net. We'll reach out, help influence opinion, swing the doubters, and build the foundation for success in government, and a restoration of America's legitimacy and goodness in the world."

"As we discussed the subjects, our views are pretty similar. She's realistic about the problems there, a need for a regional strategy, a diplomatic component to that strategy, the dangers of Iran, the need to keep options on the table, the issues with Israel...etc."

"Dreams don't have to end. When I set out from Arkansas to West Point in June of 1962, I had a dream about a journey, a journey of service. That's what life is - it isn't a destination, but it's what you do along the way. You wrote a beautiful letter for me in December...letters like that were one of the reasons I could think about running every day. But don't let the dream of a better America die. That dream isn't about a person, it's about all of us, what we do with our lives, how we affect others around us, how much we give, how much we share. And we can still have the dream of a great America, noble in spirit, true to her values, a beacon of hope, an inspiration for billions, the centerpiece of a new epoch for mankind. Yes, that dream is still there for us...we just have to work for it....it is bigger than any one person, and longer than any lifetime. And it isn't exclusive. Any of us can participate and share that joy."

who brings him into their administration will be very lucky indeed.

He delivers something few Dems do these days - restores hope and faith that somehow we will get ourselves out of this nightmare Bush has gotten us into and get our country back on track.

5. his personal history is going to help me a lot as I consider his endorsement

He has always, from his adolescence onwards, been about public service. As a Rhodes Scholar and all-around mega-achiever, he could have done absolutely anything and made himself a multimillionaire by 30 if he'd wanted to, but his whole life, and his family's life, has been devoted to serving America.

He's one of the few people I would trust to endorse Hillary without an eye to his own personal future in a Clinton cabinet... he has NEVER put himself before the greater good. And he doesn't need a VP or cabinet post, anyway... he's already achieved enough for a dozen lifetimes, and would probably be perfectly happy to have a quiet life as a businessman in Little Rock. If he accepted a position in the government it would be out of his ever-present sense of duty and not for any personal glorification. He totally doesn't need that.

So although I am not going to support Hillary just because Wes recommends that I do, I'm willing to take another look. For now, I'm 1) hoping for Gore and 2) till then, cheering for Kucinich, but if someone of the patriotic caliber of Wes Clark says Hillary is okay with him, I can at least keep an open mind.

But oh, how I wish that we had the chance to elect somebody who could write something so beautiful about America so easily and sincerely.

9. Yeah, she was realistic about the "failing insurgency" and when she voted for the war.

The general is need of a little brush-up on Hillary's pro-war record, and her continuing pro-war stance.
