Three times they cut to a prerecorded scene with no sound. I'm sure the show was being broadcast on a delay.

19. The sound didn't cut out on the commercials at my house.
But when it cut out the three times during the show that I mentioned, they went to a different camera angle, a shot from up high looking down on an empty auditorium. In other words, it appeared to be a prerecorded shot to be used whenever they decided to cut away from what was happening on the stage. I believe all live shows do this now: broadcast on a delay so there are no more "Janet Jackson" or "Kanye West" moments.

Since it has been reported that Sally Field used the word, "goddamn," I suspect that's why she was bleeped. I don't know why Ray Ramano was bleeped.

30. From an AP article in the Austin American-Statesman:
"The usually staid awards needed attention from the censors from the start, with first presenter Ray Romano. He joked about his former "Everybody Loves Raymond" wife, Patricia Heaton, sleeping with her new "Back to You" co-star Kelsey Grammer.

But he used a stronger word, which prompted Fox to black out the show for a few seconds. Heigl mouthed another expletive, which Fox unsuccessfully tried to evade with a different camera shot."

66. The comments that were frozen out were due to "swear words"
Field apparently used the word "God-damned" in conjunction with her comments and that's why it was frozen. Ray Romano (hardly someone people connect with political statements) and Katherine Heigl were frozen out as well for a few seconds for the same reason.

People discuss the war every day on the news. I find it hard to accept that they're going to bleep out war comments when the general populace is opposed to the bloody thing by now.

Too bad they didn't freeze out Seacrest's entire presence which in my opinion was the really offensive thing about the production.

Seriously, they not only cut the sound they cut the camera on her at the same time. If it was just the sound that would be one thing, but cutting her off camera at the same time seemed a bit too convenient.

18. nothing is 'live' these days
Almost all networks broadcast 'live' television with a three or five second delay. This is to allow them to, yes, bleep or cut anything.

And I don't believe there was a technical problem during the end of Field's comments. At the time the sound went out the camera angle changed, and as soon as she stopped speaking you could clearly hear very loud applause from the audience. Maybe the sound goes out but the camera doesn't veer wildly at the same time unless they don't want us lip-reading.

It's not tin-foil - Canada got to hear her remarks uncensored, and we didn't. Thanks, Fox, for all of our 'freedom'.

there were more instances than just sally field's speech, though none of the other cuts were politically related.

the reason for the cut from Field was because she said 'goddamn.'

The sound was cut and they cut to a pre-show quiet shot everytime they censored someone. They did the same to Ray Romano and others throughout the night.

This was clearly FOX censoring Sally Fields' anti-war comment.

"Ray Romano, Heigl, Field keep Emmy censors on their toes"
http://www.mercurynews.com/breakingnews/ci_6913793

LOS ANGELES—The Emmy censors were bleeping busy on Sunday night as three actors slipped in expletives during the live broadcast.

Ray Romano joked about his former "Everybody Loves Raymond" wife, Patricia Heaton, sleeping with her new "Back to You" co-star Kelsey Grammer. But he used a stronger word than "sleeping," which prompted Fox to cut away for a few seconds.

"Shame on you. We have TV children!" Romano said to Heaton, who was sitting in the audience.

Immediately after delivering his routine early in the show, Romano, wearing dark glasses, headed out the back door.

Sally Field praised mothers when she won an Emmy for lead actress in a drama series but also let her anti-war sentiments surface with a God-related swear word.

"And, let's face it, if the mothers ruled the war, there would be no (expletive) wars in the first place," Field said.

47. well
actually, it's not censorship.

Censorship is the government preventing people from saying something. Nothing compels a TV network to air something.

From the clip I saw, she was clearly making an anti-war statement - I don't know how much was cut after the "goddamn", but it was very clear she was speaking out against war prior to that point.

But if she hadn't used "goddamned", I bet it wouldn't been covered in its entirety (and if she did't forget what she was going to say and blather for 15 seconds, letting her time run out.)

55. Well, she was wrong anyways, so no big loss
Lots of mothers support war, and lots of ruling mothers have sent their citizens to war - all the way from Cleopatra to Margaret Thatcher. Hell, we even have mothers joining the armed services now, which they wouldn't do if they didn't in some ways support war. To think things would change at all if only mothers - or women in general - "ruled" the world is naïve.

56. Revoke their broadcasting license
The public airwaves shouldn't be abused in such a way.

77. They HAVE no broadcasting license. They are a NETWORK.
They provide a program service. It's their affiliates - most of which are owned by other corporations, NOT Rupert Murdock - that have the licenses.

And for those guys to be called on the carpet for what the Fox Network did would require an FCC and an FTC and a government that wanted honest broadcasting. We haven't had that since Saint Ronald Reagan got rid of the Fairness Doctrine and station ownership limits and a whole bunch of other rules that aren't sexy enough to get your attention.

If a Democratic candidate had the nerve to say "I want to make broadcasters responsible to the public again," I'd be willing to bear his or her children. Or, well, maybe I could breast-feed them...I am kind of a chubby guy.

64. The FCC ruled specifically in 2004 that "God damn" is NOT obscene.
With that in mind, what rationale is left for bleeping her other than an objection to the political content of her statement? And that, my friends, is censorship.

76. With the current of heavy fines, broadcasters aren't taking any chances. She was censored for GD,
not political content. She was on a rant, lost her train of thought, was obviously going long, they started the music, and when she blurted out the GD stuff, she got censored:

"At the heart of Nora Walker, she is a mother," Field said on starge. “May they be seen, may their work be valued and raised, and to especially the mothers who stand with an open heart and wait – wait for their children to come home for from danger, from harm’s way and from war. I’m not finished. I have to finish talking … if the mothers ruled the world there would be no goddamn wars in the first place."
