Book Has Nostalgia For W's Dad

AN upcoming biography of George H.W. Bush takes an unusual tack in describing his legacy as the nation's 41st president - it rips into son President George W. Bush. In Timothy Naftali's "George H.W. Bush," edited by the late Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr., the author writes that the nostalgia for the father's presidency has risen as the son's has plummeted. "When George W. Bush had spoken confidently of how history would revise his father's reputation in 1997, he had no reason to believe that it would be because of his own shortcomings as president," he writes. "A decade later, as the younger Bush's own presidency limped to an end, many missed the elder Bush's realism, his diplomacy, his political modesty and, yes, even his prudence." Naftali adds that "ironically many that someone like the elder Bush could come on the scene and clean up his son's mess in Washington as he had once done for Ronald Reagan." The bio is out this December from Times Books.

1. 41 bankrupted the country just like 43; just not to the same degree.

And let's NOT forget the NOBLE Iran-Contra corruption. Like father, somewhat like son, only many times worse.

3. Poppy Bush not being held ACCOUNTABLE for his crimes of office make this BS possible
along with the constancy of Bill Clinton dancing attendance on Poppy the last 7 years and rehabbing his reputation. Nobody finds it odd that Bill used his goodwill to prop up Poppy's reputation and legacy wile Jimmy Carter has been the one that gets the lion share of media scorn?

Reagan and Bush have not been held to account and their legacies are being REWRITTEN by those who have every interest in keeping the real stories of IranContra, BCCI, CIA drugrunning and how they have led to EVERYTHING happening today from the American people.

Why are so many Democrats willing to LET THIS HAPPEN - again?

4. I'm not nostalgic for him but at least he had some semblance of an iq.
I think jr. is so far below his father that the distance of the fall can hardly be measured. And considering the level of Sr. that is a pretty harsh judgment.

6. Poppy Bush was and is an evil bastard...
...I remember at the time remarking to a friend that he perfectly illustrated the phrase "the banality of evil". How anyone could be both boring and profoundly evil at the same time, is a question I will leave to others -- but Poppy certainly stands out as a real world example of just that.

Personally I think he's behind a lot more than any of us imagines. Yes I know it sounds tin-foily. I don't care, it's how I see it. I believe him to be intimately involved with many of the horrors that our militarized, secrecy-obsessed governing classes have perpetrated over the last 50 years.

On the other hand, one can still enjoy a book that builds up Dad by ripping Sonny-boy to shreds. Because it will bug the sh*t out of Dubya.

I had the thought this weekend, "Man, Poppy wasn't even this bad". Seems like *'s secret mission is really to redeem Nixon and Poppy's legacy.
