How Bush is on the job protecting us . . .
In the last year we have seen recalls of Chinese products including:

Tires that separate tread from body causing accidents at high speed.

Toothpaste containing a poisonous chemical: diethylene glycol, better known as anti freeze.

More than 50 Mattel toys containing lead, 19,000,000 total for one company.

Dog food laced with melamine, a plastic that killed pets.

Pet jerky treats that make pets sick.

Peanut butter contaminated with the same plastic that killed our pets.

Fresh and frozen seafood farm raised in human waste.

Pork products laced with illegal drugs and growth hormones.

And yesterday; contaminated Leukemia drugs causing adverse reactions among sick children became the latest recall.

In 2005 the FDA requested a budget that would provide for increased inspection of food, other imports, foreign drug manufacturing plants and expanding the number of inspectors domestically and abroad. That budget increase was cut resulting in the number of foreign drug factory inspections falling from 515 to 485 and staff cuts by as much as 5%.

Don’t worry though; the Bush administration is on the job. Last month they set up an Interagency Working Group on Import Safety to identify actions that can be taken within 'existing resources' to improve import safety. Let’s see, the existing agencies didn’t protect us before so what can we expect from the new improved existing agencies? Right off the bat they reported that it is impossible to make imports safe because there are just too many of them. So, to minimize the danger they recommend expanding the “public/private partnership”. In other words, privatize the import safety inspection regime.

Let’s see; the for-profit companies that import the lowest cost products regardless of safety will now be in charge of inspecting the lowest cost products for safety. Companies like Mattel that kept quiet for more than a year after discovering that toys imported from China had lead based paint on them will be in charge of making sure that toys imported from China won’t have lead based paint on them. I’m sure WalMart will be all over their imports making sure they meet current US standards for safety; after all safety and quality have always been the primary concern of that company right?

I’ve got an idea. Let’s cancel NAFTA, CAFTA and the WTO. Let’s build it here, give ourselves a raise so we can afford to buy it and tell China to take a flying flaming fuck at a rolling donut.

2. "tell China to take a flying flaming fuck at a rolling donut."
In my mind, that's the only true response to this recall madness!!!

Good piece, BTW.
