Olbermann Recovering From Appendectomy
By Michele Greppi

MSNBC’s rising prime-time star Keith Olbermann was still hospitalized Monday after undergoing an emergency appendectomy Friday.

Mr. Olbermann’s appendix apparently ruptured Wednesday, but he wrote it off as a stomach ailment and soldiered on. Though still feeling ill, he nonetheless reported for work Thursday night, when he anchored MSNBC’s analysis of President Bush’s prime-time address on the war in Iraq. It wasn’t until Friday afternoon that he decided it was time to seek medical attention, according to an MSNBC spokeswoman.

Led by Mr. Olbermann, MSNBC’s speech-related programming (was) edged out by about 3,000 viewers from 9 to 10 p.m. in the prime news demo of adults 25 to 54 to finish second to Fox News Channel. In total viewers, CNN ranked second to Fox News, beating MSNBC by about 345,000 viewers from 9 to 10 p.m.

Mr. Olbermann’s medical emergency benched him from NBC’s “Football Night in America” Sunday, but it’s hoped he may be able to return to “Countdown With Keith Olbermann” some time this week. In the meantime, former MSNBC anchor Alison Stewart is expected to fill in for him.

2. Ruptured appendix is serious!
He fights peritonitis!:scared:

http://www.merck.com/mmhe/sec09/ch132/ch132f.html

The cause of appendicitis is not fully understood. In most cases, a blockage inside the appendix probably starts a process in which the appendix becomes inflamed and infected. If inflammation continues without treatment, the appendix can rupture.

A ruptured appendix spills bacteria-laden intestinal contents into the abdominal cavity, causing peritonitis (see Emergencies: Peritonitis), which may result in a life-threatening infection. A rupture also may cause an abscess (a pus-filled pocket of infection) to form. In a woman, the ovaries and fallopian tubes may become infected, and the resulting blockage of the fallopian tubes may cause infertility.

A ruptured appendix also may allow bacteria to infect the bloodstream—a life-threatening condition called sepsis (see Bacteremia, Sepsis, and Septic Shock: Bacteremia and Sepsis).

5. I know
I almost died of it back when I was 11 years old after my appendix burst in the early 60's. Was in a coma for a week and the doctor just filled me with antibiotics. I was so sick they could not even remove my appendix until almost 3 weeks later. Back then many died. I hope KO recovers quickly and I wish him a speedy one at that.

8. I know that pain. He's got a high pain threshold.
I'm glad they're being extra careful with him. The pain is better now, I hope (mine sure was after the surgery), but he might be fighting a fever. Poor thing. I hope the nurses are being extra nice. ;) I know some DUers would would volunteer for that.
