Got Crocs? Be careful on the escalator
Got Crocs? Be careful on the escalator
By SARAH KARUSH, Associated Press Writer

At rail stations and shopping malls around the world, reports are popping up of people, particularly young children, getting their toes caught in escalators. The one common theme seems to be the clunky soft-soled clogs known by the name of the most popular brand, Crocs.

One of the nation's largest subway systems — the Washington Metro — has even posted ads warning riders about wearing such shoes on its moving stairways. The ads feature a photo of a crocodile, though they don't mention Crocs by name.

Four-year-old Rory McDermott got a Croc-clad foot caught in an escalator last month at a mall in northern Virginia. His mother managed to yank him free, but the nail on his big toe was almost completely ripped off, causing heavy bleeding.

At first, Rory's mother had no idea what caused the boy's foot to get caught. It was only later, when someone at the hospital remarked on Rory's shoes, that she began to suspect the Crocs and did an Internet search.

"I came home and typed in 'Croc' and 'escalator,' and all these stories came up," said Jodi McDermott, of Vienna, Va. "If I had known, those would never have been worn." ....

1. A friend of mine broke her foot wearing crocks (I have them and love them)
and her doc told her he had seen a lot of that with crocks.

8. There were a lot of broken ankles in the 70s
from people wearing clogs and platforms and not dealing with the limitations inherent in wearing them.

That being said, I loved wooden clogs when it was raining. My feet never got wet!

whilst drunk back in those days.

We call them Tourist Clogs.

I never knew what the real name of them was until just now.

13. To each his/her own. I will say this, though...
We have a loot of tourists on foot here in Tiburon and I see a lot of people wearing these Crocs (I feel so enlightened, finally knowing what they are called).

And I see a lot of foot-weary folks - but never wearing those shoes. They must be darned comfortable.

But you watch yourself on elevators, depakid.

Until now.

They must be comfortable because, if not, they are too ugly to wear.

They are popular, but I'm stumped. Gimme flip-flops anytime!

7. I wear them in my workshop because they are a nice cushion...
on the cement floor. However, only with socks since, like you said, they are bound to make anyone's feet sweaty.

9. Actually, the type of plastics used plus the ventillation means very little sweat
or stink. My SO wears them all the time- and I guarantee that they don't smell half as bad as her sneakers!

Plus, compared with flip flops, they provide more protection and are easier and much more comfortable to walk in. Just be wary with the escalators!

comfy than flip flops. I can't wear flip flops--they hurt my toes, and my feet get dirty.

18. I think they belong outdoors
or in the garden. Not walking around city streets. Now, granted some people whose jobs demand that they stay on their feet all day on concrete floors might find them comfy also, but I would still prefer to wear something that ties.

22. Got Crocs? Be careful on aesthetics -
Your sense of style can get caught rather horridly in the court of public opinion. Your personal dignity is in danger of being completely ripped off, causing heavy outflows of shame and ridiculosity.

Friends don't let friends wear Crocs. They just don't, not your real friends.

42. Yes I wear sneakers.
Because if I tried to wear a pump with no strap, or a backless shoe like a croc, my heel would fly out the back when I pulled my leg back to take the next step.

I have extremely narrow bony feet(A triple A, next to the narrowest they make) and narrow heels. For dress shoes it's Ferragamos with a high front so they stay on, for casual it's laceup sneakers.

As my mom would have said, I wouldn't wear Crocs to a dogfight.

(said about ugly clothing)

27. Good thing to know--we all wear and love them.
I have bad feet, and a pair of Crocs with socks is super comfy. Their diabetic version, I hear, is wonderful and far, far cheaper than most diabetic shoes (also ugly). Hubby's worn his all over Chicago today, along with going up escalators out of the subway. I'll tell him to be extra careful tomorrow.

I know they've gotten a bad rap for fashion, but they are so dang comfy that I just don't care.

32. I love them
and have several pair, including a mixed green/yellow pair that have gotten lots of compliments.

However, I have had to give them up for serious walking because of the neuropathy in my feet. My podiatrist said that they aren't as supportive as I need shoes to be in order to keep my feet from hurting. So I've had to get back to enclosed shoes......I hate things that bind my feet.

The podiatrist said they're fine for people without foot problems, though, and I know a lot of people in the medical profession who swear by them, partly because they're so light and don't tire your feet easily.

Edited on Mon Sep-17-07 08:30 PM by porphyrian
I mean, the four year old I can maybe excuse, but how the fuck do these other people ride an escalator? With their feet jammed up against the step above them (or below them, riding down)? Are they looking at the ceiling when they try to step off? I've ridden escalators more than some people floss, and I can't think of a single instance where I didn't at least glance down when I was about to get off. Maybe these shoes have some weird contour that makes them more likely to get stuck, but really, if you're standing mid-stair, how likely is that?

Edit: spelling

They can get wet, muddy, dirty - you just wash them off.

We'll warn the kids to watch when they are on an escalator.
