Murtha: GOP will turn on Iraq when ’08 pick is made
By Mike Soraghan
September 17, 2007

House Appropriations Defense subcommittee Chairman John Murtha (D-Pa.) said Monday that he expects that Republican lawmakers will begin abandoning President Bush’s Iraq policy after the GOP picks a presidential candidate next year.

“As soon as the primaries are over, you’ll see Republicans start jumping ship,” Murtha said in remarks at the National Press Club.

Murtha also predicted that, despite the unpopularity of Congress, Democrats will make broad gains in next year’s election because voters are upset with the war.

“People are frustrated, but you’re going to see a big Democratic increase,” he told reporters after his speech. “I think we’ll pick up 40 50 seats.”

The lawmaker, a key adviser to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on military issues, is not waiting on the presidential calendar to push for a broad troop withdrawal from Iraq. Murtha said he expects the Iraq war supplemental spending bill, up for debate in October or November, to include a specific date for withdrawal.

5. yep...
Gee, I thought September was when Republicans were going to flock under the withdrawal standard.

Earth to Murtha - this war belongs to the GOP because it benefits their campaign contributors and industrial friends. They'll never abandon this disaster.

6. Yes they will, if it means complete and total defeat.
That is what Murtha is saying, this will be a Complete and total defeat of the GOP. When the GOP candidates see how bad it is come fall of 2008 (When the Election campaign goes into full swing even on Congressional levels), they will rapidly abandon Bush, hoping to win as an "Independent Republican".

Politicians do NOT like Losing, and on seeing defeat staring them in the face, will do ANYTHING TO AVOID DEFEAT. IF that means dumping Bush they will do so. In fact most of supporters of the GOP have already abandon the GOP, that is why Obama and Hillary are getting so much corporate Money. The people who benefit from this Debacle will also see the coming defeat and abandon the GOP. They want to support a winner and that will NOT be the GOP. Thus come the fall 2008, GOP candidates will be facing two problems, Polls showing they coming defeat, and a lack of money to overcome that defeat.
