jpgray's upper thoracic unveilment unified field theory
1. Babies need sustenance, and their demand for foodstuffs is relatively inelastic.
2. Some people, locales and social situations determine the exposed nipple or chest of any gender to be offensive, regardless of said nipple's specific exposure purpose.
3. Most human behaviors exist on a spectrum from discreet and polite to disruptive and tacky, and chest exposure of any gender for any reason is no exception.
4. Many natural and beautiful human behaviors and body parts can be seen as offensive by a plurality of persons depending on context.

Therefore?

Consider the context, locale, and social situation. In almost all cases breast-feeding can be done in such a way as to offend no one. Though the delicate and easily offended sensibilities of some busybodies are irritating, you can show those unhappy souls some basic consideration while still feeding your baby and not horribly inconveniencing yourself. Showing consideration to people who have a deluded concept of what's right and wrong can be done without debasing your own ethics, and in most cases is the appropriate course of action if your main purpose is to feed your baby without any hassle. If your main purpose is to change society's misguided views of right and wrong through a sort of civil disobedience via lactation, be prepared for a hassle. Also, remember there is some sweaty, hairy, overweight guy who wishes he could just wear a speedo in all situations and has no concept of others' personal space. While the two behaviors are not equivalent, it does go to show that while the human body is natural and not at all evil, there are times where very few would choose to see certain amounts of it under various circumstances, and the question of where to draw the line is arbitrary. Therefore at some times it's best to show some consideration while still doing what you feel is right and necessary.

7. "their demand for foodstuffs is inelastic"
hahaha that made me grin! Good one

One question remains : how should one go about discerning those with deluded concepts of what's right and wrong, whose sensitivity one may be inclined to take into account as one of parameters of the social situation as you suggested, without polling the complete aforementioned locale up front regardless of indications of the baby's inelastic demand and signs thereof upon entrance in the locale?
