I hereby nominate Pat Leahy for the weekly Democrat with a Spine award. |
|
(Note that this award often goes unawarded for weeks due to the chronic critical spine shortage.)
Senator Leahy, in recognition of your currently visible spine, I nominate you to receive this award. The award itself is a beautifully hand crafted recycled grocery bag plastic sculpture of the spine of the extinct Wussasaurus. It is mounted to a heavy base of compressed sawdust and resin matrix painted a very tasteful gloss black.
Your inscription, tastefully incised in my garage into a plated brass sheet with a Dremel engraving tool, will read:
Awarded to Senator Pat Leahy for his action, in his role as Judiciary Committee Chair, above and beyond the call of complacency.
Whereas Senator Leahy issued subpoenas that went long ignored, and
Whereas Senator Leahy smacked his second, the compliant Senator Arlen Specter (R-Bendover), and
Whereas Senator Leahy stuck his tongue out at Dear Leader and has said he will hold Judge Mukasey hostage until he gets the heads of Meirs and Bolton and others on a pike wrapped in a subpoena, and
Whereas spines are in short supply and any act of more than going along to get along is noticeable by contrast,
Be it known that Senator Pat wins this week's awards.
The beers are on you, Pat!
Congrats.

3. As long as it is an uplifting letter and the speech is seen as pandering. |

5. I think I'll wait until the subpoenaed documents are produced. |
|
Only when we see the fruit of the compromise will we know whether he really has a spine or was just saving face to get this behind Congress. I want to know whether the new attorney general will enforce Congress's contempt citations. That is the big question. No awards for spine until the recalcitrant witnesses appear before Congress.

7. I think this is really one of those awards |
|
that no Dem really wants to receive...it's awarded for TALKING like you have a spine without actually backing up the talk with action.

But the man can use all the calcium supplement he can get. We need to call his office and make sure they know we have his back by the millions and that he should push ahead, full-steam, without fear.

16. In all seriousness .... yes he is |
|
I don't think for a moment this is pandering or an act to curry favor with the base. I believe Pat is as serious as a heart attack here. That said, I can also imagine him backing down, initial intent notwithstanding.

He needs support from other members of the JD, or his position is untenable.
