Cops who tasered student on administrative leave
University president asks for investigation, calls incident "regretful"

University President J. Bernard Machen said today he had asked the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to investigate the arrest and determine whether campus police used excessive force.

Two officers involved were placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the probe, said Machen, who called the incident "regretful."

"We're absolutely committed to having a safe environment for our faculty and our students so that a free exchange of ideas can occur," Machen said.

2. Yes, even university officials realize they screwed up
Maybe some others here need to consider the same - blame the police for overreacting, not the student.

Impeachment is a scary question to ask, we should praise those who have the courage to do so.

6. Kerry is irrelevant in this discussion
Its about

the right to speak out and dissent

the right to express your opinion in a public forum

the right to not be exposed to police brutality

the ability of a "progressive forum" to put the rights of a student above their bias for or against a candidate

I'm sickened by those who are criticizing this kid like a bunch of freepers just because they think it makes Kerry look bad. Kerry is irrelevant.

7. I'm sickened by people who DISSENT from your constricted
pov, being labeled as freepers. He was disruptive and disorderly in rushing the mike and cutting in front of others. Or don't their rights count?

9. Bullshit
you need to look at the tape again.

I guess you also thought all those dirty hippies during the sixties chanting "no war" should have been tasered, too?

A student forum on a college campus isn't a tea party subject to Roberts Rules of order or a beauty pageant. The cops were obviously uncomfortable with the questions the kid was asking. Too bad. Difficult questions still need to be asked and those who ask them have as much rights as anyone else.

5. I'm glad to see the university is showing some responsibility

I believe the blame for what happened falls squarely in its lap.

8. They know it was inappropriate
and I hope they get sued for it, too.

Those who don't have kids in college right now don't understand how much college campuses have changed. Most today promote college sports, macho culture, consumerism, alcohol abuse and look the other way on bullying, and sexual crimes against women, but clamp down hard on any group that doesn't toe the GOP line.

If you're a guy with long hair, look out, the cops will kick your ass from here to Sunday for the most minor infraction.

Its not a friendly environment for anyone who wants to engage in serious discussion and protest over serious issues.

11. Sounds like our board today.
Except for the "GOP" line, post after post supporting this tasering.

12. More than regretful
it shows how much of our democracy we have lost. I'm glad Kerry made a statement about this and hope he will answer the questions in some venue. We deserve to know why he conceded so quickly and the answers so far don't cut it.
