Webb’s Iraq bill inches closer to 60
Webb’s Iraq bill inches closer to 60
By Manu Raju
September 19, 2007

Four new Senate Republicans signaled Tuesday that they may vote for a Democratic amendment aimed at giving U.S. troops in Iraq more time at home between deployments, helping Democrats inch closer to a rare victory on the conduct of the Iraq war.

The talks came amid tense backroom negotiations over the terms of the Iraq debate in the Senate, which is expected to dominate the floor schedule during the next two weeks. Democrats suggested that they would not soften an Iraq troop-withdrawal amendment and Senate leaders signaled that some compromise measures being negotiated by centrists from both parties likely would not come to the floor for a vote.

Democratic leaders, recognizing they lack the votes to secure binding timelines for withdrawing troops from Iraq, are making the amendment by freshman Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) the centerpiece of this week’s efforts to force a change in the course of the war. The amendment, which would require that troops stay at home for the same length of time as their tours in Iraq, failed in July by a 56-41 vote.

But since then, Sen. Tim Johnson (D-S.D.) has returned to the chamber after missing the first eight months of the 110th Congress due to a brain injury. Now four new Republicans may reverse course and are gauging the impact the Webb amendment would have on the war. Winning at least three of those Republicans over could give the Democrats the 60 votes they need to send the measure to a conference committee with the House.

2. Whatever happened to the "nuclear option"?
Remember when these hypocritic assholes were whining and crying when the Dems even mentioned a fillibuster. Now they fillibuster EVERYTHING.

McConnell (R-Douchebag) just fillibustered the DC Voting Rights Act again!!!

Why doesn't anyone call them on this bullshit. Or go Nuclear.

7. Petraeus is more puppet than military genius.
Who managed to kick the Nazi German Butt in something like nine or ten months. (June Sixth 1944 to early May 1945)

Yep back in the day the American might could go against the heaviest war machinery in the Universe and WIN a real and complete victory in less than ten months.

The last competent general I recall was Eisenhower.
Of course it helped Eisenhower that his cause was not a made up threat but a real one.

It also helped his cause that he served under a Commander in Chief, Franklyn D Roosevelt, who spent less time talking to Jesus and more time actually analyzing how a military campaign should be managed. Roosevelt allowed those with credible experience to run the show - he would never for instance, have ignored a military man like Scowcroft, as George Bush did, and decide on his own that, "Heck we do not need no stinking 316,000 guys at D- Day - I'll just send in one third that many."

Nope back in the day we had great leaders of both parties.

BTW if you ever have a chance to catch the re-run of Jon Stewart's video film footage of first Bush saying, "The surge is succeeding in Iraq," with that phrase then followed by footage of Petraeus saying, "The surge is succeeding in Iraq" And then Bush is saying, "If we have our Troops pull out now there will be devastating consequences for the people of Iraq," followed by petraeus saying, "If we pull our Troops out soon there will be a catastrophe in Iraq," Etc you come to realize that the game plan for Petraeus was written out and actually broadcast to the Nation over the summer by the President.

We did not have to wait to hear what Petraeus was gonna say. Bush had already done said it several weeks ago.

Petraeus is more puppet than military man.

9. If you find my argument too serious and too history-based,
catch what Wolf Blitzer and Bill Maher are saying regarding Petraeus.

11. It only takes 51 votes to defeat the GOP
That's the number required to pass a bill in the Senate. When they refuse to act because they can't override a veto or stop a filibuster, they are allowing Bush to have his way without holding him -- and the rest of the Republicans -- accountable to the American people.

In 2006, we gave the Democrats a majority. We did not give them that majority so they can sit around counting noses and toes and avoid responsibility. We sent them there to -- ACT !

Pass the bills and let Bush worry about the filibusters and the vetoes. Imagine how bad the Republicans would look next election if they had continually supported vetoing and filibustering the will of America's representatives.
