Sen. Chuck Shumer says Michael Mukasey was his idea. Way to go, Chuck. As if the Bush Crime Family doesn't know where to find the creepy nominees it seems always to produce for key positions within this corrupted and broken government of ours. But, just to be sure, Shumer says he called the White House (whatever that means) and insisted the "consensus candidate" - one acceptable to the Democratic power structure as well as the Republican power structure - was none other than the former judge who had no problem ordering people held without charges, bail, or access to an attorney, all in the name of "fighting terror." This anti-Constitution freak is to be our new Attorney General.

Jesus, I'm sick of this routine. Aren't you? Bush (and now Shumer!) nominates yet another neo-fascist; a charade of a hearing is conducted; the committee members posture and preen for the cameras and the audience; testimony reveals the nominee is a liar and a sneak. Then, the Republicans call a news conference to declare any Democratic effort to deny or postpone the nomination in question is further proof that the Democrats want to open wide the U.S. to fanged, slobbering terrorists. Further, the Republicans shriek, unless the nominee is immediately given an "up or down" vote in the full Senate, Osama bin Laden will unleash wave after wave of suicide bombers who will invade downtown Chicago and kill and dismember every man, woman and child within a sixty mile radius of the Loop. The candidate is confirmed. The Democrats promise they will be tough on the next guy, promise, cross my heart.

Meanwhile, in an obvious attempt at sophisticated, Manhattan-style humor, today's New York Times calls on the Senate to "question him (Mukasey) closely about troubling aspects of his record, and make sure he is willing to take the tough steps necessary to repair a very damaged Justice Department." What aspects of his record? The Times: " As a judge, he was too deferential to the government. In the case of Jose Padilla, who was accused of participating in a dirty bomb plot, he ruled that the president may detain American citizens indefinitely as 'enemy combatants.' His dangerously narrow reading of the Constitution was rightly reversed by a federal appeals court."
The Times continues listing this guy's "troubling" aspects: "In a 2004 Wall Street Journal op-ed article, Mr. Mukasey denounced the 'hysteria' of Patriot Act critics, and lashed out at the American Library Association for trying to protect patrons’ privacy. He also made the dubious claim that based on the structure of the Constitution, the government should 'receive from its citizens the benefit of the doubt.' And writing in The Journal this year, he promoted the truly awful idea of a separate national security court that would try suspected terrorists."

Enough? Sure. There it is. All on the record. Mukasey is as bad as any neo-con or neo-fascist Bush has forced down our collective throats during the past six years. And the Democrats will confirm him - after much praise directed at ol' Chuck Shumer for his wisdom in selecting a "consensus candidate."

Excuse me while I wander into the woods out back and try to understand - yet again - what has happened to my country.
