Cpl. Terrence P. Allen, 21, of Pennsauken, N.J., died Sept. 15 from a non-hostile incident in Al Anbar province, Iraq . . . The incident is under investigation.

The terse statement in the Department of Defense news release issued yesterday left many questions for John and Connie Allen, who were preparing a funeral for their 21-year-old son.

The Marine was originally scheduled to come home today.

...

Cpl. Allen's death was apparently caused by a gunshot wound to the head at Al Asad Air Base, where he was waiting to leave for home, according to the family.

The Allens have received no further details about their son's death, they said. They originally told the media the shooting appeared to have been a sniper attack.

Something really strange here.

Either it was hostile (sniper), or it was murder, or it was suicide. Why in the hell is a marine corporal at Al Asad air base (remember Al Asad?) assassinated (or a suicide) the day before he is supposed to leave for home?

I guess there could be all sorts of reasons - after all, people can have their differences - one marine could just up and decide to off one of his comrades... maybe it was an argument over a poker hand. Remember, they have nothing to do because there is no violence there; it is pacified, that sheik whatsisname calmed it all down... oh, wait...

The stuff that keeps happening makes it harder and harder not to be paranoid.

I wonder if he had lunch with bush?

2. Questions
Terry Allen lived a few streets away from me (one street away from where another was killed in Iraq in 2005). Our streets are lined with flags and black ribbons. The military apparently has ruled out a sniper. Guess that leaves accidental discharge of a weapon, murder or suicide. I really don't believe it's suicide. He was just finishing his second tour, was scheduled to come home yesterday (Tuesday). Had talked to his family a few hours before he was shot and was very excited about coming home. Had already reenlisted. Loved Marine life, just married in February and he was going to be training officers stateside. I have a strong feeling that the family will accept whatever they are told.
