Under Sharia law, the victims become the criminals, again.

Afghanistan is building new jails for women. Though there are only 300 female prisoners now, that number is expected to grow.

While there are no signs of a crime wave, one of the reasons for the increase is an unlikely one. Lacking in transitional houses for released prisoners, a suggested solution includes using jails as secure places where women can stay until they are reintegrated into society.

By some strange logic, funding for building jails is much easier to come by. But again, half of the women in jail should not be there at all.

A 2006 report from MSNBC describes the attempted suicide by self-immolation of a 16 year old Afghan girl.

~snip~

Herat public health director Raoufa Niazi has seen about 150 self-immolation cases over the past two years and pleads with women who survive that fire is not the way to escape their problems.

2. That is so sad
It was hard enough in America in the 80's and 90's to get away from an abusive husband. The law didn't take it too seriously, but they did usually arrest the abusive person to get them away from the victim for the night.

I cannot imagine the despair that these GIRLS must feel when they are married to a man against their will, who then becomes their owner. If he begins abusing her, there is no recourse, they feel, but to kill themselves. And their best hope to avoid future victimization is to make sure that they actually kill themselves. Otherwise, they go to jail for trying to kill themselves.

I cannot imagine being in that situation at 14, 15, 16 years old. Those girls should be in school, not married off to some guy that their father/uncle/brother made a deal with.

6. What has Laura Bush done about this aside from a statement?
Is she just giving lip service to this horrible situation?
