Teacher Sues for Right to Carry Gun to School: Cites Domestic Violence Protection
Perhaps if she is in so much danger from her ex she should not be working with children in the first place. I'm certainly sympathetic to her DV issues, but in my mind if she is so concerned about being attacked at school that she needs a gun, then she is putting everyones eles in harm's way.

I would be removing my child from her class immediately, but the problem is she is going as a "Jane Doe". I'm sure there are some fairly nervous parents in Medford, Oregon right now.

PETER SLEETH
The Oregonian Staff

An Oregon teacher fighting to carry a handgun to class took her case to court Tuesday, asking a judge to validate her right to carry a concealed weapon in school.

"Jane Doe," who has asked to keep her name secret, says she is a victim of domestic violence. She teaches high school in Medford, a city of 75,000 in southern Oregon.

In her filing in Jackson County Circuit Court, she asked the judge to tell the Medford School District to stop interfering with her right to carry a Glock 9mm semiautomatic pistol to work. She says her mission is twofold: to protect herself from an abusive ex-husband and to strike a blow in favor of the right to bear arms.

"I want to be able to carry one because it is my Second Amendment right," she said.

Her attorney said Tuesday that he considered the case a constitutional one; her safety concerns only enhance the argument.

1. I agree with her. No, I don't think she should give up her career because of an abusive ex. (nt)

3. You actually think she should be allowed to carry a gun to school?
That is totally insane. I had many teachers in school that I would not trust with a gun at school or otherwise. If we go down this path I guarantee that some kid is going to be shot to death by a teacher. Sound like a good risk to you?

12. So because you don't trust some of your teachers....
.... everyone else should suffer the loss of the rights guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment?

10. Ah, the rights of one outweighs the the rights of the many...
All children have a right to be educated in a safe and gun free environment. Whatever rights she thinks she has in regards to her personal safety are outweighed by the rights of innocent children just trying to go to school. If her presence gets in the way of the personal safety of the children that she is charged with teaching and caring for, then it is her moral obligation to ask for paid leave until she can guarantee the safety of her students. At no point should children ever be subjected to concealed weapons at school, especially when the gun is there to protect against an outside threat that the teacher's presence has brought into the school. I feel for her situation, but she needs to check her moral compass.

13. Where are these "children's rights" mentioned?
I must have missed the part of the Constitution that guarantees the right to be educated in a safe and gun-free environment. (Not that I believe the two of those concepts go with each other, anyway.)

I completely agree with you that if this teacher's situation is so dire that she has specific reason to fear for her safety, she should not be in school. I cannot, however, agree with anyone who says there are places a licensed CCW holder should not carry.

Are you aware of the requirements to get a CCW?
Are you aware of the crime rate of CCW holders compared with the general population?
Is your opinion based on emotion or rationale?

15. My opinion is based on common sense.
I don't care what the requirements are to get a CCW, there is no reason to have guns in schools. If there should be any place on earth that is gun free it is schools. I think we've seen exactly what happens when guns enter schools already. And don't even try to tell me that teachers with guns would stop school shooting situations. Guns create school shooting situations in the first place.

2. You go second amendment
Edited on Wed Sep-19-07 10:48 AM by BOSSHOG
Lets arm all the students too and the janitors and the lunch room workers and the crosswalk guards and the librarians. Loaded guns carried by all concerned for SAFETY'S SAKE. Its right there in the second amendment. Perhaps handgrenades for the discerning backback carrier, and flamethrowers in the trunks of all cars ALL FOR SAFETY'S SAKE. Go go second amendment.

4. Were restraining orders even tried in this situation?
In my opinion her suggestion is only appropriate if somehow her ex was a fugitive from the law sending her death threats.

7. Who knows? She's going as a Jane Doe.
So now every parent in Medford, OR has to wonder if their kid's teacher is the one whose ex might turn school into a hostage situation. The solution, as far as I'm concerned, is to put her on paid leave until the threat from her ex is lessened.

Either her DV concerns are bullshit or she has very little concern for the safety of the children at her school.

14. By the time
they've figured out restraining orders don't restrain these types of abusers, she'll probably have died violently.
