7. I think it's just to lighten the mood for a day when there is little to be happy about
I'm personally overwhelmed and depressed about all the bad news we all are having to (and are going to have to) endure these last few months of the Bush nightmare.

Sorry: I'm scallywagally o'errrwhelm'd and deprrress'd about all th' blac kie spot we all be havin' t' (and be charrrtin' a courrrse t' have to) endurrre 'ese 'errrelast few months o' th' Bush nightmarrre, and a bottle of rum!

14. How can you not love a pirate?
Edited on Wed Sep-19-07 12:53 PM by Mutineer
People write SONGS about pirates man! My personal favorite? A Pirate Looks At Forty:

Mother, mother ocean, I have heard you call,
Wanted to sail upon your waters
since I was three feet tall.
You've seen it all, you've seen it all.

Watch the men who rode you,
Switch from sails to steam.
And in your belly you hold the treasure
that few have ever seen, most of them dreams,
Most of them dreams.

Yes, I am a pirate two hundred years too late.
The cannons don't thunder there's nothin' to plunder
I'm an over forty victim of fate
Arriving too late, arriving too late.

I've done a bit of smugglin'
I've run my share of grass.
I made enough money to buy Miami,
But I pissed it away so fast,
Never meant to last, never meant to last.

I have been drunk now for over two weeks,
I passed out and I rallied and I sprung a few leaks,
But I've got to stop wishin',
Got to go fishin', I'm down to rock bottom again.
Just a few friends, just a few friends.

I go for younger women, lived with several awhile
And though I ran away, they'll come back one day.
And still could manage a smile
It just takes awhile, just takes awhile.

Mother, mother ocean, after all these years I've found
My occupational hazard being my occupations
just not around.
I feel like I've drowned,
Gonna head uptown.

Now there you go mateys! That's a pirate song!

15. And another Pirate Song I'm quite fond of. . . .
Mutineer by Warren Zevon:

Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Hoist the mainsail - here I come
Ain't no room on board for the insincere
You're my witness
I'm your mutineer

I was born to rock the boat
Some may sink but we will float
Grab your coat - let's get out of here
You're my witness
I'm your mutineer

Long ago we laughed at shadows
Lightning flashed and thunder followed us
It could never find us here
You're my witness
I'm your mutineer

Long ago we laughed at shadows
Lightning flashed and thunder followed us
It could never find us here
You're my witness
I'm your mutineer

I was born to rock the boat
Some may sink but we will float
Grab your coat - let's get out of here
You're my witness
I'm your mutineer
You're my witness
I'm your mutineer
I'm your mutineer......

31. Barrett's Privateers
Arrrr, a fine pirrrate ditty. I ha' done listen'd ta' it this verry morrrnin'.

Barrett's Privateers
by Stan Rogers

1. Oh, the year was 1778,
( "How I wish I was in Sherbrook now!")
A Letter of Marque came from the King
To the scummiest vessel I've ever seen.

Refrain:
God damn them all!
I was told we'd cruise the seas for American gold.
We'd fire no guns, shed no tears.
Now I'm a broken man on a Halifax Peer,
The last of Barrett's Privateers.

2. Oh, Elcid Barrett cried the town
( "How I wish I was in Sherbrook now!")
For twenty brave soul all fisherman who
Would make for him the "Antelope's" crew

3. The "Antelopes" sloop was a sickening sight
( "How I wish I was in Sherbrook now!")
She had a list to the port and her sails in rags
And the cook in the scuppers with the staggers and jags

4. On the king's birthday we set to sea
("How I wish I was in Sherbrook now!")
It was ninety one days to Montigo Bay
Pumping like madmen all the way

5. On the ninety sixth day we sailed again
( "How I wish I was in Sherbrook now!")
When a bloody great Yankee hove in sight
With our cracked four-pounders we made to fight.

6. Oh, the Yankee lay low down with gold
( "How I wish I was in Sherbrook now!")
She was broad and fat and loose in stays
But to catch her took the Antelope two whole days.

7. Then at length we stood two cables away
( "How I wish I was in Sherbrook now!")
Our cracked four-pounders made an awful din
But with one fat ball the Yank stove us in.

8. Oh, the Antelope shook and pitched on her side
( "How I wish I was in Sherbrook now!")
Oh Barrett was smashed like a bowl of eggs
And the Maintruck carried off both me legs.

9. So here I sit in my twenty-third year
( "How I wish I was in Sherbrook now!")
It's been six years since I sailed away
And I just made Halifax yesterday

As sung by the one and only Captain Bogg and Salty, Portland's own all-pirate band.
