6. I heard Naomi Klein interviewed yesterday.

She was saying that Rumsfeld was a disciple of the Milton Friedman "privatize everything" movement, and that the use of contractors in Iraq was part of that push. Just like the destruction of New Orleans was used as an excuse to privatize all the services in that city, such as the school system. So, yeah, it sounds like you are right. It's all about privitization. The "disaster capitalists" still need the US military to "clean the slate" so to speak, but it's interesting to ponder whether they think the same kind of authoritarian measures can be accomplished with the private sector. Without the rule of law hindering their use of the military, the mercenary option must seem very attractive, and fits in with the "Chicago School" philosophy.
