I don't know why I didn't realize it until now.

Why pay our troops when you can wash your own dirty cash by running it through the Senate as war-funding to pay for Mercs owned by Corporations that YOU own! So fucking brilliant.

Possibly you didn't realize it because it makes no sense.

2. Not Congress.
The BFFE or whatever you want to call it. People like Liverman are just in their pocket.

3. Yep. They have no stake at all in anything going right.
In fact, the more messed up things get, the better. I agree.

26. I lived through the LA Riots. This looks like looting to me.
Randi is quite correct, on this point, but my quote makes a better bumper sticker.

on the US Military. If they had had their own private army...

Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.....:scared:

6. I heard Naomi Klein interviewed yesterday.
She was saying that Rumsfeld was a disciple of the Milton Friedman "privatize everything" movement, and that the use of contractors in Iraq was part of that push. Just like the destruction of New Orleans was used as an excuse to privatize all the services in that city, such as the school system. So, yeah, it sounds like you are right. I haven't read her book yet, but I would like to. Here is a link if you are interested: http://www.naomiklein.org/shock-doctrine

15. When questioning the motives of the government gets you called
a tinfoiler, it's reassuring to have someone smart and thoughtful like Klein in your corner.

20. No offense Bonobo, but Naomi Klein pulls it together a bit more coherently than your OP
:)

However, I get what you are saying and encourage any DU'er who hasn't watched or read Naomi Klein to do so.

21. No offense... I guess. But why would you expect otherwise?
I try to stay well informed and I am more so than many.

It is natural to expect that someone like her is, well, more knowledgeable and coherent about a subhect she has looked into deeply.

So... help me out here. I'm trying to learn.

14. Here's a great review of her new book
http://www.opednews.com/articles/opedne_stephen__070919_reviewing_naomi_klei.htm

It's all about privitization. The "disaster capitalists" still need the US military to "clean the slate" so to speak, but it's interesting to ponder whether they think the same kind of authoritarian measures can be accomplished with the private sector. Without the rule of law hindering their use of the military, the mercenary option must seem very attractive, and fits in with the "Chicago School" philosophy.

9. Its not quite that simple....
but MY take is that the army is for the dirty work and the mercs get the fun stuff like killing men, women and children with immunity, while riding around in hummers and wearing dark sunglasses.

17. It does explain a few things...
Like how Congress allocates hundreds of billions of dollars to the military just for the Iraq occupation, yet the troops on the ground can't get proper body armor, and have to weld hillbilly armor on their Humvees using scrap metal from junkyards.

At the same time, Blackwater gets everything they want...
