1. When you're dealing with 30-40 kids, rules like those are probably a saving grace.
Schools need to be made small again. Preferably tiny.

2. I'm printing this up and posting it in my room tomorrow!
My fave:

27. Watching Channel One

* When Channel One comes on, put down anything in your hands.
* Look at the television monitor.
* Listen for understanding.
* You may work on something quietly during commercials. When the program returns, put down anything in your hands, look at the television monitor, and listen for understanding.
* Remain quiet during the entire program.

Awesome!!

3. compulsively thorough, maybe,
but I don't see them as particularly restrictive (for classroom rules). I like that he lets his kids work on something else when the Channel One commercials come on. :)

4. he puts the nuns to shame...
a tad controlling? ..and a bit confusing...
21. Getting a tissue

* Students should bring a box of tissues to their homeroom teachers at the beginning of the year.
* Do not disturb the class or teacher
* If a lesson is being taught or someone is talking, wait.
* If no lesson is being taught or no one is talking, quietly go the tissue box (on the overhead projector cart), sharpen your pencil quickly, quietly go back to your seat, and resume work.

10. He's an anarchist compared to any nun teachers I was around in elementary school
Most of those don't really look like a big deal, they're just putting in words most of what I would have taken for granted as far as regards rules in any class I had when I was in elementary. The washroom one and the weird wording on the Channel One bit ("listen for understanding" just sounds buzzwordy to me, and I don't get the whole Channel One concept in the first place) are the only things that seem silly to me.

Honestly, I don't see what the problem is with most of that thing. There's very little there I wouldn't expect from a sixth-grade class if I were an elementary teacher. Is it unnecessarily explicit and legalistic? Yes. Restrictive? It's at least in the neighborhood of what a classroom should be like. I'm bemused, not offended.

11. I would hope...
these rules are rules for the sake of rules. The dictatorial stance of the wording is problematic to me...and the attempted suppression of any expression does not seem very healthy, or conducive for learning. It sounds more like the camp for wayward kids that I was always threatened with. If my children were under that teacher's care these rules would give me pause.

23. Going to the restroom

* Do not ask. You may not go during class.
* If there is no possible way to wait, you must accept a tardy and follow the tardy process when you return.

Can't this get him in legal trouble?

20. No, they go between classes
More and more high schools are not letting kids go to the restroom during class. It's really not safe in many schools.

They are allowed to go between classes. Classes last less than an hour in most schools.

14. not anal
just doesn't want to put up with bullshit. it's not my teaching style, but the teachers I've worked with who lay out rules like this do not have management problems. at a Title 1 school that can be quite a challenge sometimes.
