A huge victory for MoveOn, and for all of us in this struggle.
Remember when MoverOn was just another power-pestering web-mob with no influence?

Well, they just got blessed.

As did we all.

I don't care what the vote was. Someone decided MoveOn was enough of a threat that they had to be addressed.

1. First they ignore.

2. Then they laugh.

3. Then they attack...

...and what's #4 again?

Hm.

Oh, and for anyone who thinks this is a big deal, I did a quick search...

Concurrent resolution celebrating the contributions of the architectural profession during "National Architecture Week"

Celebrating the anniversaries of the International Polar Years (1882-1883 and 1932-1933) and International Geophysical Year (1957-1958) and supporting a continuation of this international science year tradition in 2007-2008

Resolution celebrating Penn States designation as Pennsylvanias singular land-grant University

Resolution Celebrating 80 Years of The Grand Ole Opry

RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING THE NEWBERRY HIGH SCHOOL BULLDOGS FOOTBALL TEAM ON THEIR FIRST-EVER CLASS AA UPPER STATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

CONCURRENT RESOLUTION celebrating the use of technology in education

Resolution celebrating February 2005 as Marriage Month in Michigan

...so yeah, whatever.

but I got so pi$$ed at their inaction, that I stopped
giving to them, and started giving monthly donations
to DU and MoveOn, and maybe a local candidate or two.

About 1 month ago I got a call from the California Dems
to donate money. I told them that when the Dems in DC
stop supporting the war, I consider giving money again.
Until then, you get $0.

12. Donated to MoveOn earlier this week and called my 2 WI Senators
and told them what an utter waste of time this is. MoveOn is NOT a democratic organization and bowing to pressure for Dems to denounce them is absurd. Both Kohl's and Feingold's staffers sounded a bit "uh-huh". Maybe I wasn't clear enough. But ultimately, I just said they had more important work to do than focusing on a group that had some valid points about Petraeus.

The grand ole opry, or the Dems caving?

I'll give you a hint...it won't be the first one I mentioned.

It may not mean much to you Mr Pitt, but this vote speaks volumes as to whom, exactly, has the balls on the left. The shame of it is, that it doesn't appear to be our elected Democrats in congress, but rather an internet organisation.

MoveOn gets my money from now on.

122. I see you're a Hillary supporter. Read the following, ...
On Wednesday's Randi Rhodes radio program, a woman from Code Pink discussed
that Hillary Clinton will not allow any people wearing anti-war T-shirts to
attend any of her rally's or events where she is appearing.

Her election team also has a list and pictures of anti-war activists and will
not allow them into these rally's or events where she'll be speaking.
The woman stated that they were very aggressive about keeping these people out
of these venues be it physical force if necessary. If they have entered the
event and are later discovered that they are wearing T-shirts or displaying
banners, they are immediately removed. If they resist, they are subject to arrest.

I hope she doesn't start acting like King George and his controlled crowds.

Senator Leahy voted for this idiocy, but he voted against the IWR, against supplemental spending, wrote and sponsored the Restore Habeas Act, advocates cutting all Iraq funds, and wrote and sponsors the War Prevention Profiteering Act.

I'm not jettisoning him for making this vote. Criticize yes, complain in an email, yes, but drop support for him? Nope.

I didn't get the point of those resolutions in the context of MoveOn.org. Did those resolutions also get the Senate's attention this week? Or are they just examples of the kind of nonsense they deal with every day?

And, parenthetically, when Ms. Nancy and Uncle Harry say they're too busy with important stuff to deal with impeachment, is this the kind of important stuff they're talking about?

149. Here are ways to donate to MoveOn.org
One method is via MoveOn's website:

https://pol.moveon.org/donate/donate.html

Whether you donate by credit card or donate by check you will have to fill out a form that enables MoveOn to comply with federal laws. If you decide to send a check you need to have a printer to print out a form to send with your check.

Here's the donate-by-check site:

https://pol.moveon.org/donate/check.html

Then you send the completed form and the check to:

MoveOn.org Political Action
PO Box 9218
Berkeley, CA 94709

I'm sending a check as well. Good for everybody who sends them money :applause: what better way to send a message to MoveOn and to the Democratic Farts that censured them.

What freaking nerve. :grr:

Why do you think the Dems did this? What did they have to gain? Seriously....

43. So the Democrats rebuked MoveOn
You gotta learn to think a couple more steps ahead, Will.

Didja ever think it was because the Republicans keep going after MoveOn all the time linking them to the Democrats? The Rethugs want MoveOn to go away because it represents a threat to them and a large amount of political funding for the Dems.

So wouldn't it be to the Democrats' political standing to separate themselves from MoveOn? And by publicly bringing attention to them for what they did works to raise funds for them. Look at this thread alone. Someone here is pledging to eat noodles all week to donate to MoveOn.

Attack? Hah! Fundraising plan!

"Unintended consequences" are something not a one of them have figured out yet, or they wouldn't be supporting this war, wouldn't have signed the Patriot Act, or the Homeland Security Act, or the Iraq war resolution, or the bankruptcy bill, or any of the other crap that they've signed AGAINST THE WILL of the people of this country.

Does anyone in this country like NAFTA except for the corporations? No. Congress doesn't give a shit about actual human beings who are citizens of the U.S.

47. It's NOT just Moveon, it is "ANYONE" and First Amendment Rights.
To express the sense of the Senate that General David H. Petraeus, Commanding General, Multi-National Force-Iraq, deserves the full support of the Senate and strongly condemn personal attacks on the honor and integrity of General Petraeus and all members of the United States Armed Forces.

Condemns "personal attacks" on "all members".

This is NOT just about Moveon but about limiting our First Amendment Rights.

Edited on Thu Sep-20-07 04:12 PM by uppityperson
Just got this back from MoveOn:
The U.S. Senate just told us to sit down and be quiet. They passed a resolution condemning MoveOn.org and it has one purpose: To intimidate all of us who care about ending this war. To send a message that anyone who speaks unpleasant truths about this war will pay. To make everyone--especially politicians--think twice before they accuse the administration of lying.

169. MoveOn had a right to run the ad; the Senate had a right to condemn it, and you have
a right to criticize them. ALL of that is freedom of expression. People are too quick to scream "First Amendment" when someone disagrees with them or tries to deny them a forum.

The First Amendment says one cannot be jailed for expressing one's views. It does not say one can express them anywhere, any time, in any manner, using someone else's microphone, lecture hall (reference to taser boy), or internet forum (eg, Freep denial of alternative views).

The senators can be as hypocritical and frivolous as they choose. The voters can throw them out for being a waste of space, but they are not infringing on Moveon or the NYT's 1st amendment rights by "condemning" in a meaningless resolution. Now if they sent brownshirts, that would be another matter.

A waste of the Senate's time - they are really there, not to offer opinions on newspaper articles. They are there to legislate and to oversee the executive branch which they have not been doing for the last 6 years..

179. Arguing if they had the right to do this is not what I am arguing. Thinking overnite,
The Senate publicly condemning anyone who speaks out against "the troops" and/or Gen Pet, what I find appalling is that they would do this. Of course they have the right, as individuals, to free speech. That is not the issue. The issue is that they, as 1/2 the Legislative Branch of Gvt would publicly pass judgment on any who criticizes the military. Their job is to pass laws, and to act as a check and balance to the Executive and Judicial Branches, and to represent we the people.

89. I agree
Its an attack on those who dare to question the military, and Bush's PR point men with uniforms.

According to Republicans, the media, and half the Democrats, if a general lies, you can't say he's lying because that would be a personal attack.

Attacks on the patriotism of critics kept the truth about the war from the public before the war started. That suppression of truth is why we are in the mess we are in now.

Until all Democrats stand up to right wing star spangled bullying it will never stop.

This vote today was a huge shot in the arm for MoveOn. People who've never heard of the ad before will scratch their heads at this silly resolution, and wonder why the Republicans are wasting time. Not to mention free speech issues. I hope this will be the start of a conversation among those who haven't understood the issues....like free speech, supporting Petraeus=supporting the troops, etc.

I wish I could afford a donation, even a small one, to MoveOn right now, but I can't. They'll get my money, though, as soon as I land a job.

BTW, I wonder when the Cornyn will introduce a resolution to condemn Admiral Fallon for his words about Petraeus? (Hint: don't hold your breath).

Edited on Thu Sep-20-07 04:38 PM by blogslut
I wanted t know why he accepted $5900.00 in campaign donations from swift boat funder, Bob Perry. When Senator Durbin asked him if he (Cornyn) was willing to amend his resolution to include Texan-funded SBVT, here's what box-turtle John said:

“I am not willing to amend my resolution … He keeps emphasizing that this is a Texas based group… I have no idea whether it is or it is not …”

That is a damned lie. John Cornyn knows exactly who Bob Perry is and what Bob Perry does. Here's a link to the donations made by Bob Perry to Senator Cornyn this last March, plus the monies he donated to the SBVT:

http://www.newsmeat.com/fec/bystate_detail.php?st=TX&last=perry&first=bob

BONUS: A screen grab of the $7200.00 - $2300.00, donated to Cornyn from Bob Perry:

EDIT ADD: And when I was done, I donated $25.00 to Moveon.org. I wish it could have been more, but I'm no Bob Perry ;)

102. I trickled in another $25
It isn't much, but what I can do. Good for MoveOn, one could suppose he went deaf waiting for out Democratic "leaders" say anything. Keep using the frame: "Who betrayed us?" if not General P, then who? Maybe some of the back-stabbers are among the 22 Democrats who voted to say "tsk-tsk, you're sooo impolite" to MoveOn.

103. Now, If They'd Only Say "Impeachment"...
... we might be able to moveon toward ending the war and redeeming Our National Soul.

But I do agree that it's a huge victory to force the regime to label a newsad as "disgusting," while claiming torture is somehow an American virtue. To get this, hopefully non-temporary, small change of frame.

The trouble with Step #3: They Attack You is that it presumes that you fight back -- without putting your weapons "off the table."

That's the ONLY WAY to get to Step #4: Then You Win.

Will, you'd be someone who might know: can you think of precedents for the Congress passing resolutions to rebuke U.S. citizens for speech? I'm sure they exist but can't think of any, and I'm very curious what they might have been.

How does a Chimp respond to an organization's attacking a General for being dishonest? By being dishonest, of course. Holding back the tears, Bush said he felt that Moveon attacked not just Betrayus, but all of the troops. Maybe the Senate should pass a resolution condemning that smear.

Poll: Civilian Death Toll in Iraq May Top 1 Million
A British survey offers the highest estimate to date. At least 4 die in a Sadr City car bombing.

by Tina Susman

BAGHDAD - A car bomb blew up in the capital’s Shiite Muslim neighborhood of Sadr City on Thursday, killing at least four people, as a new survey suggested that the civilian death toll from the war could be more than 1 million.

The figure from ORB, a British polling agency that has conducted several surveys in Iraq, followed statements this week from the U.S. military defending itself against accusations it was trying to play down Iraqi deaths to make its strategy appear successful.0914 04

The military has said civilian deaths from sectarian violence have fallen more than 55% since President Bush sent an additional 28,500 troops to Iraq this year, but it does not provide specific numbers.

According to the ORB poll, a survey of 1,461 adults suggested that the total number slain during more than four years of war was more than 1.2 million.

ORB said it drew its conclusion from responses to the question about those living under one roof: “How many members of your household, if any, have died as a result of the conflict in Iraq since 2003?”

Based on Iraq’s estimated number of households — 4,050,597 — it said the 1.2 million figure was reasonable.

148. FYI- SUMMARY OF MOVEON.ORG 9/20 8:30pm Conference Call and Questions:
Here's everything I could type, as fast as I could:

Eli Pariser:
Clearly we've made an impact on Republicans.
They wouldn't come after us unless we were a threat.

3.3 million member org - ordinary Americans taking responsibility for where the country is headed.
Long tradition of getting truth out against Republican lies so it's no wonder they're coming after us.

Bush strategy in last 10 days hasn't worked, actually public wants out of Iraq even more. 5 straight days of Bush and Patreus coverage didn't change any minds.

Mentioned today's Senate condemnation. Today alone Moveon received tens of thousands of dollars of support and many emails of support.

Mentioned the WEbb amendment and how the Repubs voted against the amendment - so when they had an opportunity to stand by the troops and do something about it they didn't - and it's outrageous that they took the time for the anti-moveon vote.

Clearly, some people in this country do believe that a general can not be questioned. It's important to say that the truth is more important than a uniform or any one person.

Expect Moveon to continue to pressure about the war.

Sharing an email they got today:
"I'm currently in Iraq. We don't agree with this war. Thank you for speaking out. We don't have a voice. You are our voice."

Thanking members for support and now taking questions:

Note: keeping an eye on the numbers I noticed a maximum of about 2200 at one time. As question started, numbers dropped to just over 500 or so.

QUESTIONS:

Will you continue to place ads? Yes, we will share as we put them out. Just a note on ads, I wish we could just put moveon members in front of national media and they would listen to you all because then they'd realize this is an amazingly mainstream group of good people. Nationally, it's difficult to get the media to cover ads and so that's why we use this tactic - to make sure our message gets out in a big way.

Has Petraus reacted? Yes, it was a fairly muted reaction. The truth is he understands he has a political role to be the salesman - he was previously on the phone daily with Ed Gillespie - so this is someone who understood he had a political role to play. Bush has selctively chosen Generals to represent him who are willing to do this.

Someone asked about Ed Schultz - they said he contributed today and asked his listeners to as well.

How can we keep the pressure on and force Bush to make a change? The strategy is to isolate Bush so that Republicans in congress abandon him and he's forced to change. He is so unpopular. That's one reason why we see him calling us out today as a badge of honor. We have to keep Dems pushing forward to end the war; in our opinion Dems have not done that enough but it is noticeable that in the last few weeks several important Republicans have come out agains the Bush war policy.

Some attendee comments - One said good work, keep it up! Another said moveon is good but targeting Patreus was wrong and we should keep it on Bush.

Eli responded that they targeted Patreus because Bush has a history of using military as his front men - look no farther than Colin Powell in 2003. If this had been done then, would it have helped people to look more closely at those claims? Hard to say.

Someone asked if the ad allowed Republicans to use it as a distraction? Answer: distraction from what? The Pres had a very choreographed plan for last week involving 2 days of testimony and press conferences etc, to stay in front of americans in the press. At the very least the ad interrupted that. In the big picture we gained support and money and made some people question the information.

Discouraged people said they're tired of writing and calling with no response. Eli said it's still important to continue and he wants to work to convince people that they are doing important work and to continue it. Working at a local level at local events and local newpapers is also important. Start where you are.

Another marine from Phila PA said thanks for moveon work.

Again, remind people congress would rather spend time on the resolution and political grandstanding than actual work toward ending the war and helping the soldiers.

As to the meaning of the vote - it doesn't mean very much, listed several resolutions on useless topics and that it will fade in time but it illustrates the position of moveon -that we're not insiders and never want to be and it's our job to irritate them and we'll keep pushing.

Every day there are more and more people saying that's enough - but when you have 3.2 million people saying that out loud and together it's much more powerful so encourage others to join up and add to the power.

162. I'm having a hard time understanding what the other resolutions have to do with anything.
Yes Congress issues the most inane resolutions all the time. But I'm not seeing a good analogy between celebratory resolutions and a condemnation resolution that tells us the majority of the senate consider it perfectly acceptable to essentially instruct a critical organization to "sit down and shut up." (to quote MoveOn's follow up)

I do whole-heartedly agree with you that you just can't pay for this kind of publicity. And I think it is important to look at the positive side of things.

I still find it a bit alarming that enough congresscritters thought this resolution should even reach the Senate floor. It's one thing to celebrate the minutae of Americana, it's quite another to target one opinion. All the more galling when shrill vitriol coming from the extreme far right is ignored or embraced as perfectly acceptable behavior.

I'm glad MoveOn made the ad, they have absolutely nothing for which to apologize and I'm delighted the publicity is filling their coffers. Just pissed the Senate would even bother with this in the first place.

celebrating its designation as Pennsylvania's singular land-grant university?

Seriously, what kills me is that Faux, the Republican mouthpiece, does this type of smear all the time, as do the other mouthpieces who were invited to the Whitehouse for a sit-down, plus their spokesboys Rush and the savage Weiner, and I don't see any resolutions there.

But they're really set on demonizing MoveOn, which is NOT a good thing --- around here during the last election, they used "supported by radical hate group MoveOn.com" to smear a good woman running for Congress.
