Senate Amendment 2934 tramples on the 1st Amendment!!! WTF is happening???

WTF!!!

I am baffled that folks in the Senate would pander so much to the right wing machine that they would
pass legislation condemning free speech! If they are going to jump on MoveOn.org, they better be prepared to justify selectively singling out expressions of discontent (and free speech) from ALL sides of the political spectrum.

What about the Swift Boaters - why were the rethugs not chopping at the bit to nail them in 04?

Even more disturbing, are the 22 Dems that joined this rethug hypocrisy. This is a very dangerous precedent! Right or left, any organization should feel free to express views even if they question the motives a sitting general. What's next - are they going to pass a bill to tazer anyone that criticizes the government?

Amendment copy here:

How they voted here:

On Edit: so angry forgot to spell check!

1. What part of the 1st Amendment requires that all speech to be politically popular?

3. Thank you. Here is my post on the same. (NOT MoveOn but all of us)

Reconcile these for me:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

To express the sense of the Senate that General David H. Petraeus, Commanding General, Multi-National Force-Iraq, deserves the full support of the Senate and strongly condemn personal attacks on the honor and integrity of General Petraeus and all members of the United States Armed Forces.

I am condemned by the Senate now for saying, writing ANY personal attack on ANYONE in the USA military? WTF? MoveOn is not mentioned anywhere in the text of what they passed, just "personal attacks" which means me, you, anyone.

Ok, they didn't pass a law, but it is totally against the spirit of the first amendment and this is what is pissing me off. How DARE they.

10. Thanks in return!
For posting similar sentiments uppityperson :)

I wonder, how Faux will play this to John Q Public? I can only hope others in the MSM will go ballistic and shout to We The People that this is the first step toward taking away one of the most sacred freedoms we Americans enjoy!

4. Actually they didn't
While I don't like the Senate wasting time on petty BS, they didn't pass a law.

9. While not a law - it is entered as legislative action
Appreciate the point tammywammy; and thankfully your correct - it is NOT law....yet. They did say (and pass) the following language which ...strongly condemn personal attacks on the honor and integrity of General Petraeus and all members of the United States Armed Forces.

And what could the next step possibly be?

In a way, maybe this is a good thing. It boldly screams to the American Public just who the fuck is in the White House and his influence on the integrity of our democracy. I'm just deeply disappointed 22 Dems joined this insanity.

peace~ :hi:

7. It's official. Only the fascist right is entitled to Free Speech.
The Senate has now assumed the role of scold and judge of "liberal activist" speech. I don't believe this Senate comprehends it's legitimate role in a democracy.
