At least my home state of Michigan came through - both Levin and Stabenow voted no. I expected it of Levin; good to see Debbie do the right thing, too.

Which makes me ashamed to say what state I'm from.

But I have decided *this* today. Even though I am a yellow dog Democrat who votes in every election and never has or will voted for Republican, I will never again cast a positive vote for either one of these senators, nor will I work on their behalf in coming elections -- and I don't care how close the race may be. Like the original poster says, these people are dead to me. I HAVE no senator!

25. It sure sounds like this is an attempt to divide & conquer by the Re pugs.
Some Senators went along with it, because a censure like this doesn't mean a whole hell of a lot and Move On are big
kids that can take care of themselves. So all you folks making those endless lists of Senators (lots of them good ones)
who you are never going to support again, are being taken in by the Repug shuck. This vote doesn't mean diddley squat.
Its just something to get us all to bitch & moan about certain Democratic Senators. I don't like Dianne Feinstein much
but I'm sure as hell not going to allow a Repug to take her place, and to say you'll never support Sen. Leahy again is
cutting off your nose to spite your face.

30. Let me get this straight. You disagree with just one vote and they're dead to you?
At least when Colbert does his "Dead to Me" routine he's being consciously parodic.

The senators voted for the resolution censuring the MoveOn ad because in their opinion it was in bad taste. That is, they were expressing their opinions. And so you say they're dead to you because they expressed their opinions about your expression of your opinions.

What a silly post. I suspect most people hating on Jim Webb will be singing his praises next time he verbally kicks Bush's ass. He does it regularly on about a three month cycle.

70. Well said Bucky!
I heard the same thing after the FISA vote.
One of the Dems in Congress that voted for it was from AZ.
A freshman.

If you only knew what kind of a-hole repug she replaced, people wouldn't be saying that.

Even a stupid, horrible vote from a Dem is 100x better than having a Repug in their seat.

And Senator Leahy is out there busting his behind to bring Habeaus Corpeus back.
He was one of the main people that brought down Gonzo.

Why did he vote like that yesterday? I don't know.
But I do know that he is one of the good guys.

And Webb is going to be a key player in getting us out of Iraq.

88. That's my view too.
I'm tearing into people flying into the hysterics. But I don't find the Senate's hysterics to be any more laudable. It was all a waste of time. It was enabling of the Republicans' diversionary tactics. But that said, calling a serving general a traitor is simply over the top. It is not the level of discourse I want to have associated with my beliefs.

Petraeus may be a letting himself get politicized a bit by the Bushies, but that happens to most 4-stars in controversial positions. That's a failure of his judgment, maybe even of his character. His loyalty is simply not in question and suggesting that it is--even in just an attention grabbing headline--is slimy.

It's wrong when Freepers throw the treason charge around recklessly and it's wrong when MoveOn does it, too. There's no one to root for in all of this mess.

89. the ad didn't call him a traitor
i'm sympathetic to your view with the one exception being that the ad does not call him a traitor, merely suggests that his testimony before congress is an act of betrayal t us, the people, and, more importantly, his troops in combat. i'm also sympathetic to that view.

all that said, i'm kind of undecided on the ad - something had to be said, and i'm glad moveon ran it, but i do think that it could have been worded better and delivered just as much of a stinging rebuke to petraeus and an indictment on the bush failed iraq policy.

90. You have to understand that there are certain words that trigger people
If MoveOn is going to go into the marketing business (and I think they should) they need to be smart about how words can trigger emotional reactions. "Betray" is exactly the kind of word that gets people reacting irrationally.

I suspect they chose that trigger word on purpose because it would get a reaction. If they'd run the ad and it hadn't gotten all that press, the ad wouldn't have mattered that much and the ad money would have been wasted. As it was, their core message got a hell of a lot of free publicity. So in once sense, using that phrase placed them more prominently on the map.

On the other hand, they helped muddy the waters of political discourse, which I think are muddy quite enough. In the end I think it was bad marketing. The Democrats stand to gain a lot of ground among pro-veteran voters who are tired of Republican abuse. Being affiliated with and favored by MoveOn.org could at the same time make it tougher to win over this pretty substantial block of voters. I fault no Senator for covering his ass on a vote that was all about posturing and not even close to being a matter worthy of their attention.

i think we basically agree.

it's been suggested here that to john and jane lunchpail the ad will have devastating affects for dems (your "block of voters" referenced above), which makes a certain sense. some here disagree, but most here don't give a damn, they're of the ilk that something -- ANYTHING -- needed to be said to rebuke the misleading rhetorical testimony given by this general. i know i had a burning in my belly listening to him talk! i can see both sides, politically it may not have been the most expedient move. from an activism stand-point, however, it was quite affective and it's being proven by those flocking to support moveon, soldiers included.

i also agree with assessment of the ad on semantics that most do not differentiate between the words "traitor" and "betray" - likely one is the other to most readers.

at the end of the day, however, i'm happy they ran the ad and i've since donated more money to them. moveon is a political action organization not beholden to any beltway interests and can, and should, call things as they see them. dems are free to distance themselves ("cover their asses") all they wish, who knows how well that will wash with their respective constituents. saddest of all to me, to come full circle, is that this silly resolution made it to the floor in the first place.

Sucking up to anyone who thinks there are pro-veteran votes to be had now must've slept through the 2004 election.

John Kerry was one of the most distinguished veterans the Democrats have ever had to run as our candidate for the office of President.

The Republicans gave out "purple heart bandaids" at the 2004 GOP National convention to mock the fact that John Kerry was awarded 3 purple hearts for being wounded during his combat service in the Vietnam War.

John Kerry was awarded the Silver Star, one of the highest medals of valor that can be awarded, and yet millions of people cast their vote for the Air National Guard sky pilot who had never even left this country, never saw combat - except for what he saw on tv, and who even went AWOL when he got tired of showing up for drill practice.

John Kerry saved another man's life, and possibly his own and the lives of his entire crew, and was awarded the Bronze Star with "V" for valor for an act of bravery in the Vietnam War. Yet, millions of people voted for rightwing chickenhawk Senators and Representatives who had never even served in the military simply because they were supporters of Bush's illegal, immoral war in Iraq.

If John Kerry were running for President again, I'd vote for him in a New York minute.

MoveOn.org doesn't need to apologize for a damned thing.

Vote against condemn Move On, You are a troop hater
Vote to condemn Move On - Create more rifts between Democrats and the people they represent. No Democrat should have even considered voting until right wing radio hate speech from Rush, and the like were condemned and the swift boat liars were condemned. They also should have left the room until real matters concerning this country were being addressed.

57. two reasons......not sure which is more important:
one, ironically: they didn't have the votes to override a necessary FILIBUSTER to keep it from a vote

two, they're SPINELESS....afraid of the bad publicity generated.

once again, their cowardice in the face of the right wing and its corporate water carriers allows them to be placed in (to them) an unwinnable position

They should have at least abstained from the vote.

84. Senate rules
Too arcane to explain fully, but an amendment can't be held. It could've been the subject of a motion to table or an attempted filibuster, but with 72 votes for, neither of those strategies were going to succeed -- the members who voted for it weren't going to block it from coming to a vote.

86. Why couldn't Democrats just stand united and refuse to vote at all?
Why couldn't they state this was a waste of time and taxpayer dollars and is not doing the work of the people? This just shows so clearly how bought and sold this beltway system really is. For shame.

But there is no more room and everyone on my signature line are on your hit list so all are doubly sneer worthy.

BlueDogs all of them I am sure.
