Do Not Call listings to expire in 2008
Do Not Call listings to expire in 2008

By JENNIFER C. KERR
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The cherished dinner hour void of telemarketers could vanish next year for millions of people when phone numbers begin dropping off the national Do Not Call list.

The Federal Trade Commission, which oversees the list, says there is a simple fix. But some lawmakers think it is a hassle to expect people to re-register their phone numbers every five years.

Numbers placed on the registry, begun in June 2003, are valid for five years. For the millions of people who signed onto the list in its early days, their numbers will automatically drop off beginning next June if they do not enroll again.

1. Well..
I registered my new number a few days ago. The
recording said it was good for five years, and that
it would go into effect in 31 days.

What I don't understand is why it doesn't go into
effect immediately.

4. It takes time to propagate the information
The agency publishes a new list every month, and every month telemarketers are required to update their list. So, it can take a month -- 31 days -- for a new number to be propagated to telemarketers.

2. Then the FTC will have a nice long list of numbers available for sale.
Handy.

5. That's the first series
You have to re-register. But it doesn't do any good. I have gotten call after call from some numbers. And I have reported on five times and they keep calling. What they do now is hide their company and number and you can't report them. They all say unknown caller....and unknown number.

6. I never registered, but when I see 'unknown' I hang up w/o saying a
word or listening. If they can't identify themselves, I can't be bothered.
