Two arrested in noose incident near Jena, Louisiana

Authorities in Alexandria, Louisiana, arrested two people after nooses were seen hanging from the back of a red pickup Thursday night, the city's mayor told CNN. A photograph taken by I-Reporter Casanova Love shows a noose hanging from a red pickup.

"I believe that we've confirmed at least one minor" and one adult were arrested, Mayor Jacques Roy said. A CNN I-Reporter sent in photo of the truck.

Roy said the incident is "not indicative" of Alexandria and that local authorities will look into the matter "completely, thoroughly and transparently."

Alexandria is less than an hour away from Jena, Louisiana, and was a staging area Thursday for many protesters who went to the smaller town to demonstrate against the treatment of six black teens known as the "Jena 6" in racially charged incidents.

What those boys did by hanging those nooses was disgusting and vile.

Ganging up on one of the perpetrators was not right or wise, but I would say they were provoked.

"those who would commit crimes?" Could that not apply to each and every one of us? Commit the crime then be punished? How bout that strategy?

My objection to the nooses was that it was done on school property. If you want to hang a noose on your property and advertise that your a fucking idiot, knock yourself out, but that would not be justification for physical violence.

There are a lot of "disgusting and vile" things done in this country. I suggest it is the price of freedom. We could live elsewhere where all thought was clear and pristine and "correct" and enforced.

And if I may delve down one more avenue, per the victims father he was knocked unconscious and both his ears were bleeding. Did the punishment fit his crime?? Six against one, pretty good provactive odds.

and enraged a person with your bigotry - and that person ran into you in the local pub, would you not then expect a physical confrontation to follow? or at least a shouting match? Every action has a reaction. A noose provokes reactions. The damn things were painted in school colors. That is provacative. That boy helped hand nooses, and bragged about the beating of a black student later. Then that black student and his friends beat him. I am not surprised it happened.

Keep in mind that when one of Mychal Bell's friends (one of the Jena Six still facing trial) had his head cracked open with a beer bottle at an all-white party a few nights before the school fight on Dec. 4th, his assailant received a "simple battery" charge.

In Louisiana, simple battery is a misdemeanor. Bell, who was convicted by an all-white jury, faces 20+ years in prison.

A 2003 study showed that black youths were four times as likely to be sent to the state's chaotic juvenile prisons as whites with similar records for the same types of crime. Systemwide reforms are getting underway, but slowly. Ironically, Jena itself helped make reformers' case. The town used to be the site of a privately operated juvenile prison. Heralded as an advance when it opened in 1998, the place quickly descended into Dickensian madness. Fortunately, it closed less than two years later.

I heard the local angry white man conservative radio host explain to his angry white man audience, presumably with a straight face, that the "noose tree" incident was simply a schoolyard prank, with no racial overtones whatsoever. Yes, and a burning cross is an excellent source of heat for outdoor events.
