Debate about "restoring" Habeas Corpus |
|
It amuses me to hear our legislators talking about "resorting" "granting" or "taking away" habeas corpus rights of terrorists, as if they could. As I understand the history of human rights, and of our Country, we hold these truths to be self evident that all men are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights. Although I know Mr. Bush and the Congress have a high opinion of themselves, they are NOT my gods. They don't have the power to give or take away human rights. They can only choose to recognize human rights or ignore them.

7. The rights we really have, those we retain, are those for which we fight. |

That truth should be self-evident.

I just told my young 12 year old that, in response to his concern that I wrote a strong letter (speaking out against about and to our senators) and fear of me being personally hurt because of it. Can you IMAGINE a 12 year old in fear of repercussions from my exerting my freedom of speech? I was so sad for HIM. I told him, I speak out for what we have left, so as NOT to lose it all. I told him I do this for all children and their future children too. Not to lose what others have fought and died for in order for us to have these rights. They will not die in vain. Not by my hand. I believe he finally "got it".
I also did tell him that I'm one voice in millions of people at this point, I'm not the biggest threat (alone), I haven't mobilized millions (although I am in awe of those who did, and still are doing). I couldn't think of another way to ease his mind of my safety, and I had to balance it with the duty I feel as an American to fight for our rights.
What difficult times these are becoming.
