My Role in Rathergate by James Moore
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jim-moore/my-role-in-rathergate_b_65222.html

One of the characteristics of the memos, which were immediately jumped on by right wing bloggers, was the appearance of superscript. This is the lower case abbreviation that often follows numerical designations like 5th or 3rd. According to the critics of the memos, superscript did not exist on IBM typewriters at the time the memos were supposedly written. Several researchers reported otherwise, however, that at least one model, the IBM Executive II was moving into the marketplace and had superscript available by using the "shift" key.

As the controversy over the Guard increased during the 2004 campaign, the White House began a series of Friday night document dumps, claiming they had discovered new material related to the president's Guard service. Although I was originally told there were only 161 pages, the final number was more than 300. The last document dump occurred about a week after Dan Rather's apologia on his former network's newscast. This was a single page memo promoting 2nd Lt. George W. Bush to 1st Lt. and it used superscript. The media took no notice that this piece of evidence completely contradicted the most powerful criticism of the Rathergate memos.

1. I thought the secretary was their main evidence
She was pretty emphatic that those documents weren't authentic.

What they NEVER mention, though, is that she added, "However, I witnessed all the things the memos say with my own eyes, and what the memos report is accurate."

3. No - that part got twisted and spun - she said that SHE didn't type them,
but that everything on the memos was exactly what was going on at the time.

The detractors jumped on her statement that SHE didn't type them to push their charge that it was a fake document. She, herself, never said the documents were fake.

14. Marian Carr Knox
The Dallas Morning News reported on September 15 that Marian Carr Knox, former secretary for Lieutenant Colonel Jerry Killian, purported author of the memos, said that although she did not recall typing the memos reported by CBS News, they accurately reflect the viewpoints of Killian and documents that would have been in the personal file. Knox told The Morning News: "The information in here was correct, but it was picked up from the real ones. ... I probably typed the information and somebody picked up the information some way or another."

I don't know why everyone's forgetting the one person who was there and remembers what was going on.

6. Don't forget the servicemen who testified to Bush's delinquency!
This is what has bothered me from the beginning of this incident. Why does nobody mention the fact that even without the document there is lots of evidence against Bush from people who served with him or at the same time as him. Dan Rather was on Larry King and neglected to point out this fact to him. To me, the document is just a diversion.

2. OMG....and the media IGNORED it. I hope Dan Rather shames them ALL with his lawsuit.
"This was a single page memo promoting 2nd Lt. George W. Bush to 1st Lt. and it used superscript."

They need to all be shamed for their complicity in destroying this country. Had that news story been allowed to play out as the truth it is...the psycho would not be in the WH! The media is as much to blame for our demise as the cabal is!

Who is this guy James Moore?

5. Sounds more like a set-up than the mere revelation the RW asserted.
Oh, my! I'm not sure what an organized effort to destroy a man's career for political purposes by political cronies would implicate, legally. However, entrapment or RICO or something like that comes to mind.

8. I posted copies of documents typed in Viet Nam that clearly debunked that crap!
I have a couple of letters that were typed on typewriters we had in Viet Nam in 1969 that CLEARLY show the proportional spacing and superscript capabilities. In Viet Nam, not Texas!! In 1969!

I can't even begin to describe how despicable these LIES are. What's more despicable are those whose heads are shoved up their butts so far that they buy it for even a second.

12. Any typing class in the late 60's could have told them
that superscripts were around. I hated those typewriters, because it was a weird shifting sequence. It's not something you forget when you are not that good of a typist and had to do a lot of erasing and realigning of the document you were typing. UGH! IBM Selectrics.......

15. An exhaustive study of typewriters in the 1960s here at a DKos:
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2004/9/10/34914/1603

Line by line, the entire "faked document" story is debunked.
