Bush raises half a million for MoveOn
by John Aravosis (DC) · 9/21/2007 02:25:00 PM ET

From Eli Pariser, the Executive Director of MoveOn.
Dear MoveOn member,

Yesterday, an amazing thing happened. After the Senate's shameful vote, and after President Bush called MoveOn "disgusting," our email started to fill up with messages like this one:

I'm currently in Iraq. I do not agree with this war, and if I did support this war, it would not matter. You have the RIGHT to speak the truth. We KNOW that you support us. Thank you for speaking out for being our voice. We do not have a voice. We are overshooted by those who say that we soldiers do not support organizations like MoveOn. WE DO.

YOU ARE OUR voice.

And then came the donations. By midnight, over 12,000 people had donated $500,000—more than we've raised any day this year—for our new ad calling out the Republicans who blocked adequate rest for troops headed back to Iraq.

The message from MoveOn members was loud and clear: Don't back down. Take the fight back to the issues that matter.

So today we're shooting for a very ambitious goal: Reach $1 million so we can dramatically expand the campaign we launched yesterday going after politicians who support this awful war. Can you chip in $25 toward our goal?

141. Pelosi says too busy "policy making" to impeach..Yeah, attacking liberal orgs she has time for?
If this is on a level with condemning Bush and Cheney for war crimes it would be different. But apparently this is more important than mass murder, lying us into a war, and not giving our soldiers a much needed rest.
If Bush thinks move ons ad was "disgusting" just imagine what he must have thought about the swiftboat ad on Kerry. He probably threw up after seeing that.
How does Bush reconcile having Colin Powell lie to having Petraeus run a political campaign, twisting facts to the point of scandal to continue promoting his war. Ignores Powell and is disgusted that someone might think Petraeus capable of doing what he had Powell do?
I jumped for joy reading about the overwhelming donations to moveon after the senate did their cock-a-doodle-don't. Now we know what the senate thought of move on's ad, ...and now the senate knows what we think of the senate.
Headlines should read: SENATE LOSES HALF A MILLION IN CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS TO MOVE ON.ORG.
SENATE CONDEMNS MOVE ON FOR AD...BUT THE PUBLIC CONDEMNS THE SENATE AND ADDS TO MOVE ON.
The dems have at least 25 "real" democrats left in the senate. To an optimist that means the senate is half fool.

179. What freaking "policies" are they "making?"
I don't seem them doing anything except grandstanding. They're totally worthless--ALL of them, and they need to be booted out, and SOON.

I just threw $50 to MoveOn--best money I've spent in weeks.

If we don't stand up for our rights, who will? Not our elected officials, obviously.

129. Hate to poke a hole in your logic but...
Petraeus was the target of the ad. He didn't get the donations.
So if MoveOn attacked DU DU wouldn't get the donations.

The donations went to MoveOn from people who supported them and that ad. So perhaps the freepers would donate to MoveOn if they attacked DU following that logic, but I doubt it. And also, part of the equation was people denouncing the ad and MoveOn supporters making a statement of support.

174. If you follow that thought to it's logical conclusion, yes, but as I said "I doubt it".
It was a hypothetical used to illustrate the faulty logic in the previous post. Their thinking had the attackee (DU) getting donations, but no one donated to Petraeus. People donated to MoveOn. I really think if you read both posts together you should get it.

Hey John,

Below I have pasted MoveOn's response to your idiotic censure of them for taking out an ad in the NY Times that portrayed Petraeus as the Betrayer that he is. I'm writing to ask if you could please criticize their right to free speech again. I'm sure they could use another half million bucks in donations such as they received after your foolish move. Go here < http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/youare > to get a concise summary of your actions. What is even more amazing though is that we pay you. I guess that only proves that really, we're the idiots!

I followed with a paste of the email from Eli Pariser at MoveOn. I have not included it here out of courtesy since it has already been cited by the OP.

Cornyn really hates me. I've sent him that You Are An Idiot! flash before. Once his staff responded by sending me about 500 copies of a spam message. Of course it did them no good. I always log into web mail before downloading anything to my hard drive. I thought it was pretty funny though. At least I knew he or they actually saw it!

Anybody else catch his little nyah nyah nyah speech as he gloated over that MoveOn vote?
It was at the level of a 7th grader and very very unprofessional and divisive (well, repukes never were good at being dignified)! We The People are that turd's employer and he is mocking us. I wish I had a link to a video--there must be one out there, since it did run on CNN--but it turns one's stomach, so just as well I don't.
McCain has apparently decided he doesn't need anybody's vote. He is trying to be the candidate for president, yet makes a point of mocking, jeering, and insulting two-thirds of the population! What a total loon and moron! It will be one of my greatest pleasures to watch this disgusting, pathetic, creepy person's campaign shrivel up and die.

26. MoveOn received $25
of my very hard earned dollars. I live in Tx so I am represented by repukes. I am standing tall and proud though.

In the last month I have:

Donated money to DU
Donated money to MoveOn
Signed countless petitions
Written countless emails and letters to my senators (lotta good that will do me huh)
Added 2 bumper stickers to my car, "Bush lied, and you know it" and "Impeach Bush for blowing the job"

Before the primaries, I plan to do lots of campaigning and calling in support of my choice.

Let me make a note about my bumper stickers. It is slightly scary to drive around the deep south with my black husband and with the above bumper stickers. I am sure that I will eventually be pulled over for something, but I proudly state my postition. I get so sick of the W stickers that I see around here.

87. well, the Idiot Son said he was a "Uniter"
....and look! He finally proved it by uniting all of us behind "Move On".

I still don't think they should have gone after Bush's Straw Man Petreus--the NYT add should have directly attacked Bush for trying to validate this fucked up quagmire by using a dude with a few medals on his chest. That's why Petreus was out in front--they were daring our side to go after him. And I think Move On played right into their hands--we've seen the fake sanctimony and hand wringing hypocricy before (remember Lynne Cheney freaking out cuz Kerry mentioned that daughter Mary was a lesbian?) our side should NEVER give them fodder for their righteousness.

That said, I bet the next ad from Move On--which we all helped finance: Yay us!--will drive the point home.

And this isn't much, but yesterday I received another request for campaign $upport from former Sen. John Breaux (thru the DCCC) on behalf of Mary Landrieu. I scrolled to the bottom to unsubscribe, a page popped up that asked for my e-mail, with a box to give my reason for unsubscribing. I wrote:

"I'm disappointed by the petty Senate vote today to condemn Move-On, an organization that has rallied support for Democrats whenever they have been wrongly attacked. Mary Landrieu voted to condemn not only Move-On, but my beliefs as well."

I'm sending my handwritten letter to Landrieu tomorrow through snail mail.

90. Some cool stuff in the rest of the email
All day, messages from vets and military family members kept pouring into our email, many of them aimed at the Senate:

I have given a son to this country. My brother, my father, my uncle have all served honorably and bravely. I am a loyal American. I am outraged and sick to death of the tactics this administration uses to try to silence dissent to a war that is unjust, built and maintained on lies, political power, and greed. I was content to let others fight more loudly, but no more.
–Sharyn W., NC

I am a prior soldier who served in Iraq for 13 months, and am now an expecting mom with a husband who is deployed in Baghdad. I don't think I can ever forgive the Bush administration for the lies that tricked America into this war and hurt my family so badly. I am ashamed of those American politicians who would condemn an organization for practicing the Freedom of Speech that so many soldiers have died for.
–Danielle B., OH

As a US Navy veteran and an Iraq war veteran of over a year I want to ask, What has happened to us? What has happened to our voice? Where is this country going with stopping free speech and free press? ... Every time I think of the long nights I had in Anbar remembering what I was fighting for, well here it is....
–Ahmad H., LA

These folks have made sacrifices many of us can't imagine. Their charge to us was clear: keep speaking the truth about how President Bush and the Republicans have betrayed our trust.

So we're going to expand our ad campaign—keep it on the air longer and run it against other politicians who helped block adequate rest time for our troops. Can you chip in $35 to do it?

https://pol.moveon.org/donate/mcconnell.html?id=11277-5613343-RFcNIB&t=3

And still the messages kept coming ...

I've had three nephews serve since 2002, one of whom was killed in Anbar Province. I have a fourth nephew at Quantico training. I want this war over before he is deployed and before any more of our soldiers are sacrificed.
–Michele R., NE

Three members of my family are military. Two Marines have served in Iraq and an Army Lt. is deploying in November. If we had all spoken out when the administration used General Powell perhaps we would not be in this mess.
–Carol B., PA

As a Marine I served for many reasons but one of them was to allow people the freedom of speech, whether I agreed with it or not. Wearing a uniform does not mean someone isn't a shill, is spewing propaganda, and downright lies. MoveOn has every right to buy an ad and say what they want about a public figure. This administration has lied to us, deceived us, misled us and when posed with a challenge this is how they respond?
–Keith G., VA

The Senate won't pass a policy to end the war or even to make sure our troops in the field have enough rest time between deployments, but they hold votes to crack down on millions of Americans who are upset about the war?

Well—it isn't going to work. We put together a hard-hitting ad that highlights how Republicans failed our troops and if we can raise enough money today, we'll air it across the country.

a half a mil??? That's fabulous! It's so encouraging that so many people feel this strongly about it.

109. You are MoveOn!!
What is MoveOn™?

http://www.moveon.org/about.html

The MoveOn family of organizations brings real Americans back into the political process. With over 3.3 million members across America – from carpenters to stay-at-home moms to business leaders – we work together to realize the progressive promise of our country. MoveOn is a service – a way for busy but concerned citizens to find their political voice in a system dominated by big money and big media.

The MoveOn family of organizations is made up of a couple of different pieces. MoveOn.org Civic Action, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization, formerly known just as MoveOn.org, primarily focuses on education and advocacy on important national issues. MoveOn.org Political Action, a federal PAC, formerly known as MoveOn PAC, mobilizes people across the country to fight important battles in Congress and help elect candidates who reflect our values. Both organizations are entirely funded by individuals.

Every member has a voice in choosing the direction for both MoveOn.org Political Action and MoveOn.org Civic Action. Using our ActionForum software, you can propose priorities and strategies. Both organizations also take the initiative to organize quick action on other timely issues that our members care about.

118. $$$ for MoveOn, not DSCC
I donated so much on the 2006 campaign cycle that I promised myself I'd keep my donations very low and infrequent from now on. But I gave $10 to MoveOn last night, and another $30 tonight. By conicidence, I also received a donation request from the DSCC today - and my donation would've been matched 3 for 1. I may have been tempted to toss in five bucks or so, but noooOOOooo - here's my email to the DSCC:

Uh, sorry DSCC- after the shameful anti-MoveOn vote yesterday, my money's all going to MoveOn. I contributed $10 to them yesterday, and $30 to them tonight. You've got to be kidding me if you think I'm wasting my money on the spineless pack of democrats in the Senate. You're just like Republicans, but without the guts.

I'm not contributing any more money to any senate democrats until you people stand up and do something to deserve it.

Up to now, you've been spineless disgraceful Bush syncophants.

I am so disappointed in you.

128. MOVE ON
The ONLY organization besides the DU which gets my money. In my book, Move On earnedit by standing up to those corrupt bastards in Washington.

They did what those whimpy Dem's would not do. Stand up. Face the Flames. DON'T BACK DOWN. In fact, announce your intention of fighting even more. Courage has a way of pulling more courage to itself.

If they only knew how vulnerable the GOP is right now. They're weak...wounded, like a rabid animal that fights ferociously, attacks maniacally.

And the next thing I'm going to do is write to my DINO Senator, Amy Klobuchar, one of the chickenshit phony Dems who voted in favor of the stupid, craven, anticonstitutional resolution against MoveOn. And I'm going to tell her that she inspired me to defend the constitutional right of MoveOn and everybody else to criticize the government, even a General, and she can consider my contribution to be made in her "honor."

And every time she asks me for money for her campaign, I'll send some to MoveOn.

Edited on Sat Sep-22-07 12:37 AM by Breeze54
Statement: I will fight back

The U.S. Senate just told you to sit down and be quiet.

They passed a resolution condemning MoveOn.org and it has one purpose: to intimidate all of us
who care about responsibly ending this war. They wanted to send a message that anyone who speaks
unpleasant truths about this war will pay. To make everyone--especially politicians--think twice
before they accuse the administration of lying.

We can't let that happen, so we're letting Congress know that they're not going to intimidate us.

Can you please sign on to this statement?

A compiled petition with your individual comment will be presented to your Senators and Representative.

Please Sign the Petition!
http://pol.moveon.org/fightback/

Full petition text:

"I will not be quiet, I will fight back, and I will keep speaking out until Congress forces an exit plan for this awful war."

140. Emailed Sen. McCaskill D- MO. Votes with repubs everytime. Sent $ to moveon not U
Told her the $25 I would've sent to her went to Move-on instead. She apparently never bothered to read the ad or she would have seen it was substantiated by other federal agencies. Every time she votes with repubs from now on I will send money that would have went to her to a real democrat or to an organization not afraid to tell the truth.

They thought they were being so smart and would look so good condemning moveon and instead looked like fools who just made a big mistake. Public unchanged by Petraeus pony show. These dems keep listening to the beltway press and they are always wrong. When will they get with the American public who want them to stop funding the damn war. It's getting increasingly difficult to think of My senator as a Democrat since she always votes with the republicans and I told her so. No town hall mtgs for her. She's afraid at all the criticism she would get.

I wanted to thank you for your comments about MoveOn.org's effective and accurate advertisement yesterday. Thanks to your efforts and that of the war mongers in the Senate who voted for that silly resolution, MoveOn.org raised over a MILLION DOLLARS in the last 24 hours to use to continue their obviously effective campaign against the illegal occupation of Iraq.

Please do it some more...pretty please!!!

Can we afford to put up $25 to help MoveOn? Yes we can, and we
just sent it.

We are pretty damn tired of fascist Republicans and cowardly,
cooperative Democrats, so we are just double-dang delighted to
chip in a little bit for somebody with the backbone to stand
up for American principles and not back down at the
first insult.

I just wish MoveOn would re-organize itself as a political
party and begin running candidates with MoveOn-esque ideals.

165. Dear Senator Feinstein:
I was greatly disappointed, but not surprised, to see your support of the censure of MoveOn this past week. By now you've become aware of the political backfiring of that shameful vote. Thousands of us have and will continue to donate our hard-earned dollars to an organization that tells the truth, rallies our core Democratic beliefs and presses this government into policies that reflect those core values. Millions of progressive thinking people have opted to send money to MoveOn and individual candidates. That's what I intend to do, and will remind you of this when I receive my first fund-raising notice from the DCCC, DNC or from your office.

I wish to support an entity that has the balls to call bullshit. Maybe enough of us will support this so that a change starts. I suppose it could be too late, maybe democracy and freedom and rule of law are quaint ideas no longer relevant to our world. There is no reason to quit the fight just yet though so I'll give my little bit and so will many others and just maybe something will be sparked in America. Maybe the sleeping giant will yet again awaken with a mighty roar and take back the freedoms bought with so much blood. Even some of mine. I hope so.

Give me freedom or give me death. Don't tread on me. Take care GWbushit, times are changing and cowardly fools will find few places to hide.
