IRS Agent Admits to Tax Evasion and Embezzlement

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- An Internal Revenue Service agent on Thursday pleaded guilty to charges he helped a real estate developer avoid taxes and also failed to pay taxes on $250,000 he embezzled from the developer.
Federal prosecutors said that in addition to a prison term, Bohdan Senyszyn is responsible for paying nearly $720,000 in lost taxes to the government.

Senyszyn will be fired from the IRS, prosecutors said. The certified public accountant joined the tax agency in 1986 and worked in the Paterson office, where he audited large and mid-size businesses.

He was suspended without pay in February 2005 and indicted in April 2006. His trial was to begin next month.

Senyszyn, 50, of Roxbury Township, is to be sentenced Jan. 8 by U.S. District Judge William J. Martini. He remains free on bond.

Senyszyn faces up to 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine on a bank fraud charge, up to five years in prison and fines of $250,000 for illegal financial structuring, and up to five years and $100,000 in fines for tax evasion.

The scheme began in 2002, when Senyszyn agreed to assist a friend, identified as D.H., a real estate developer in Sussex County. In violation of IRS rules, Senyszyn provided tax and business services to D.H. in exchange for home improvements done by D.H., Senyszyn admitted.

Senyszyn said he created a series of companies, partnerships and a trust to conceal his embezzlements.
