Brent Budowsky: If Al Gore Wins the Nobel Peace Prize
If Al Gore Wins the Nobel Peace Prize
by Brent Budowsky | Sep 21 2007

It is possible that in a few short weeks America will wake up to news from Europe that Al Gore has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace.

If this occurs, it will be a powerful transforming event in American politics that will bring a surge of patriotism and pride to a nation that has been torn by war, divided by partisanship, trapped in a quagmire and alienated from what Jefferson called the decent opinion of mankind.

Let’s set aside for now the question of whether Al Gore runs for president — which is unlikely, though world events can change our politics in a heartbeat.

The more important matter is what happens to our national dialogue and our democracy if indeed the Nobel Prize is awarded to Gore.

From the moment his award is announced through his speech in December accepting the prize, Al Gore will be the most influential living American in defining the terms of our national debate.

From the immediate surge of media attention until the aftermath of Gore’s acceptance speech there will be a profound surge of international and national attention to what Al Gore stands for, and what he has done.

5. Yeah, watch for the "Nobel Peace Prizers for Truth" to appear.
They'll tell us how Gore didn't earn his award with lie after lie. Watch for the corporate media to give them months of exposure.

6. The only bumpersticker I have on my bike trailer and car for candidate in '08 is Gore
I have people laugh at me, but I don't care....Until the deadline for filing as a candidate has passed, I will not stop hoping for the candidate of choice.

Yes, Al will be awarded the Nobel and yes, I believe he will run for President....I see Gore/Obama or Gore/Edwards....

:applause:

9. I could argue that he is already the most influential
American NOW and that he is defining the debate about global warming NOW. The Nobel Prize would of course greatly enhance his message and hopefully, if he does decide not to run (breaking my heart and millions of others), will be able to persuade the DEMs overall that this crisis needs more of their attention and better plans to address than they currently are flaunting. IMO, collectively, their plans suck - and are non-plans as far as I am concerned.

13. What she ^ said
Plus, IMHO, I believe Al Gore has been waiting to see if any of the candidates has a strong Climate Change platform.

To date none have.

10. It looks like a horserace between Gore and Sheila Watt-Cloutier
Edited on Fri Sep-21-07 04:30 PM by Canuckistanian

As a Canadian, I can say that I'd be extremely pleased with either nominee - or both.

From Aftenposten, the Norwegian news service:

The fight for the global climate is a fight for peace, say members of parliament Børge Brende and Heidi Sørensen, and they have nominated former US Vice-president Al Gore for a share of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Canadian environmentalist Sheila Watt-Cloutier is now nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Former US VP Al Gore has thrust the global climate change issue into the public consciousness.

The two green-thinking MPs suggest that Gore share the prize with Inuit Sheila Watt-Cloutier, in recognition for their efforts to put the danger posed by climate change on the global political agenda.

"This is clearly, absolutely, one of the important efforts to achieve conflict prevention. Climate change can lead to enormous flows of refugees on a scale the world has never seen before. Fighting climate change is immensely important work for global peace," Heidi Sørensen, member of parliament for the Socialist Left Party (SV), told Aftenposten.

19. yes, they could both get it -- with James Hansen, as well!
Can't up to three individual names receive the same prize?

12. More than a great political moment, it could help save the world.
We are running out of time to even slow down the effects of global warming. This would be one of the most important peace prizes the Nobel committee has ever bestowed, helping to redefine this issue as one of our common humanity.

14. I'd love for Al to win the Nobel
No matter what his decision on a WH run, I would be very happy to see him get the recognition he deserves for his tireless efforts to rescue the earth.

23. In my dream, Michael Bloomberg runs with Gore - for the VP position,
swearing that he, Bloomberg, will only serve one term and the VP position can go to someone else in 2012.

Bloomberg runs the Gore/Bloomberg campaign on his own $$$, so Al is not distracted at all from talking about climate change and other critical issues as he strolls to the Presidency (he doesn't have to run).

That's my dream...

B-)

18. Al Gore is the leader whose existence inspires us to think forward...unlike the nonsense inhabiting
the white house currently...we've been so disappointed by so damn many....in my honest opinion, Gore is the only solution to pull us out of this mess....to resurrect our hearts and mind and pride...to get us out of the dark ages and away from the war profiteers...he knows what it means to be American...i've seen a lot of images of him...but the one that sits in the forefront of my mind is the one of him working to help people during Katrina..I think he's running the smartest campaign in the history of the presidency...and I think he will win...he is the leader of the free world...already...he just needs to be inaugurated...well, i guess re-elected and then inaugurated...my most fervent prayer for US and the world...

25. "...to resurrect our hearts and mind and pride..."
Yes, he does that. He gives us hope. He looks toward our future, with out its difficulties and sees hope there. And he is convincing in his vision. Something I am not feeling with the other candidates. I am hopeful that they will be able to lead if he doesn't run... just hopeful though. Crossing my fingers hopeful. Not a deep feeling of confidence in their words.
