“A large part of the population is not sure if we’re living in a state of war or if, like our European allies, we should view terrorism as a law enforcement issue. That’s the issue that’s triggered the debate over presidential powers,” he said, noting that he takes an “exuberant view of presidential power.”
His audience seemed to as well.
“The president could violate Congress every day to save my life,” said one man.
Asked when the state of emergency will end, Yoo replied, “when the al-Qaida terrorist organization is destroyed.”
“It won’t be forever but it could take a long time,” he added.
Yoo asserted that an “imperial judiciary” is a bigger danger right now than an imperial presidency.

8. Interesting that he has to go to Democratic presidents to give an example of greatness. |

"Yoo argued that history will view President Bush more like Franklin D. Roosevelt or Harry S. Truman than Richard Nixon."
Fascinating.
Bush would be happy to be remembered as well as Nixon. He will have to get used to being remembered alongside US Grant, James Buchanan, and Warren G Harding.

13. W is worse than Grant, Buchanan or Harding. |

The criminal who occupies the White House is worse than any legitimate US president in history.
It's a disgrace that he and Cheney still haven't been impeached.
Will our so-called Representatives ever do their duty?

It's unrelated to your post. I will take it somewhere else.
But do you not agree that W is worse than all the others?
Take Harding for example. Teapot Dome was nothing compared to Bush's scandals. Harding at least knew he was in trouble.

23. I can say you've got a good argument there. |

I would point out that Reagan was atrocious, too, and that any president is going to seem worse while in power than after he leaves, just due to the emotions involved, and due to the fact that he is still screwing things up so everything seems more urgent. I honestly didn't think the nation would survive Reagan, either. Those who bash Bill Clinton don't fully realize just how precarious things were when he took over.
But yeah, when all is said and done and history takes it's long, hard look at Bush, he could well come out lower than Harding. Although Reagan has come out better than he should have, so far, thanks to a well-funded effort to make him look decent. History will probably reverse that opinion of him eventually. But I wouldn't be surprised to see W undergo a polishing of his image in a decade or so. Someone will look back fondly on him. Long term, historians won't be fooled. But in that void between history and current events, W might undergo a revival for a while.

The Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace is a conservative think tank at Stanford University. Reagan is a minor deity there. The Hoover Inst. and places like it have been busy polishing up Reagan's image for a long time.
