Amazing outpouring (Letter from MoveOn)
Source: MoveOn.org

Dear MoveOn member,

Yesterday, an amazing thing happened. After the Senate's shameful vote, and after President Bush called MoveOn "disgusting,"1 our email started to fill up with messages like this one:

I'm currently in Iraq. I do not agree with this war, and if I did support this war, it would not matter. You have the RIGHT to speak the truth. We KNOW that you support us. Thank you for speaking out for being our voice. We do not have a voice. We are overshooted by those who say that we soldiers do not support organizations like MoveOn. WE DO.

YOU ARE OUR voice.

And then came the donations. By midnight, over 12,000 people had donated $500,000—more than we've raised any day this year—for our new ad calling out the Republicans who blocked adequate rest for troops headed back to Iraq.

The message from MoveOn members was loud and clear: Don't back down. Take the fight back to the issues that matter.

So today we're shooting for a very ambitious goal: Reach $1 million so we can dramatically expand the campaign we launched yesterday going after politicians who support this awful war. Can you chip in $10 toward our goal?
https://pol.moveon.org/donate/mcconnell.html?id=11275-4034371-1kxgRi&t=2

All day, messages from vets and military family members kept pouring into our email, many of them aimed at the Senate:

I have given a son to this country. My brother, my father, my uncle have all served honorably and bravely. I am a loyal American. I am outraged and sick to death of the tactics this administration uses to try to silence dissent to a war that is unjust, built and maintained on lies, political power, and greed. I was content to let others fight more loudly, but no more.
–Sharyn W., NC

I am a prior soldier who served in Iraq for 13 months, and am now an expecting mom with a husband who is deployed in Baghdad. I don't think I can ever forgive the Bush administration for the lies that tricked America into this war and hurt my family so badly. I am ashamed of those American politicians who would condemn an organization for practicing the Freedom of Speech that so many soldiers have died for.
–Danielle B., OH

As a US Navy veteran and an Iraq war veteran of over a year I want to ask, What has happened to us? What has happened to our voice? Where is this country going with stopping free speech and free press? ... Every time I think of the long nights I had in Anbar remembering what I was fighting for, well here it is....
–Ahmad H., LA

These folks have made sacrifices many of us can't imagine. Their charge to us was clear: keep speaking the truth about how President Bush and the Republicans have betrayed our trust.

So we're going to expand our ad campaign—keep it on the air longer and run it against other politicians who helped block adequate rest time for our troops. Can you chip in $10 to do it?

https://pol.moveon.org/donate/mcconnell.html?id=11275-4034371-1kxgRi&t=3

And still the messages kept coming ...

I've had three nephews serve since 2002, one of whom was killed in Anbar Province. I have a fourth nephew at Quantico training. I want this war over before he is deployed and before any more of our soldiers are sacrificed.
–Michele R., NE
Three members of my family are military. Two Marines have served in Iraq and an Army Lt. is deploying in November. If we had all spoken out when the administration used General Powell perhaps we would not be in this mess.
–Carol B., PA

As a Marine I served for many reasons but one of them was to allow people the freedom of speech, whether I agreed with it or not. Wearing a uniform does not mean someone isn't a shill, is spewing propaganda, and downright lies. MoveOn has every right to buy an ad and say what they want about a public figure. This administration has lied to us, deceived us, misled us and when posed with a challenge this is how they respond?
–Keith G., VA

The Senate won't pass a policy to end the war or even to make sure our troops in the field have enough rest time between deployments, but they hold votes to crack down on millions of Americans who are upset about the war?

Well—it isn't going to work. We put together a hard-hitting ad that highlights how Republicans failed our troops and if we can raise enough money today, we'll air it across the country. Please help if you can:

https://pol.moveon.org/donate/mcconnell.html?id=11275-4034371-1kxgRi&t=4

For all of us on the MoveOn staff, this week was a bit of a rollercoaster—MoveOn was attacked by nearly the entire Republican party, while too many Democrats ran for the hills. But what kept us going were messages like these—and the incredible privilege we feel to serve all 3.2 million Americans in MoveOn.org.

When the story is written of how the Iraq war ended, you will be the heroes. Thank you.

A lot of DU members were part of the 12,000 people that donated.
Give yourselves a pat on the back. Better yet, maybe a toast is better.

2. The truth actually hurts the GOP and Repub-lite Democrats
I am tired of this 'we should be war like' stance of the Democratic Party. It's getting tired.

The whole Bush and admin and it's tainted agencies including the Bush appointed sections of the military should be cleaned out. We need proper people with the right attitude.

We fight a war if WE HAVE TO not if (we have a whim for oil) and we WANT TO. Kerry said that too.

4. I will certainly chip in
If it means sending a message to these idiots (Democrats and Republicans) that we are sick of them and this war. My children and I have been marching against this war even before it started and last Saturday we marched once again. I can only hope that a small contribution will mean that we can stop marching against a war that should have never happened.

5. A good reminder that we hold free speech as a standard, regardless of opinion on the content.
It's an awkward row to hoe at times, and has its limits, but one we have tilled for 200 years.

I figure that sends the message of why I'm donating (with the '08 elections in mind) and also I better keep it at that figure (instead of $50 or higher eachtime) because at the rate I'm going, it would be in the $1000's by next week....Everytime I hear a Repuke state that the MoveOn folks should be condemned, my finger goes click on the mouse....

18. While I did not support the "Betrayus" header
I supported the content of the ad and I did send along a message of support to Moveon.org. I also donated $25.00 to this ad effort because there was no name calling and it makes a point. This whole thing has gone entirely too far. It is time for both houses of Congress to get back to actual business, such as ending the war, insuring health care for all, fixing our infrastructure, ah you all know what I mean and what needs to be done. Congrats to Moveon.org this time. I think maybe they learned a lesson out of all this. Stick to facts and people will listen.

28. I agree with you that at this point MoveOn should stick to the facts -
and yet keep the passion.

Rhyming "Betrayus" with "Petraeus" was the the only flaw, I thought. The rhyming was snarky.

If they had simply asked, "Will General Petraeus betray us?" and that ad was a part of a campaign that also asked about the pResident betraying us and the Congress betraying us then that would have been less inflammatory.

Still, there is a fire burning right now and someone needed to yell "FIRE! MOTHER FUCKING GODDAMN FIRE! YO, PEEPS - FIRE!!!!!!!!!!" and that is what the ad did.

Someone has to shake the Congress people and Senators until they freaking wake up. I think a lot of us who were lucky enough to have contact with our Reps over the summer break tried to do just that. I attended a "Women's Issues" luncheon and took a letter with the following photo:

It got the attention of my blue dog Congressional Rep - and so did what I said about the death toll in Iraq - which came out more stridently than I had intended.

If we were living in Iraq, under occupation, with death and horror all around, would we not yell and be perfectly willing to make a big, terrible scene to bring this nightmare to an end?

:(

48. That's fine with me from here on out... but the "Betray-Us" thing got the attention
of the entire GOP, the entire Senate, all the Cable TV MSM talking heads, and even Bushie himself, who went out of his way to publicly comment.

All that publicity was worth it - it's cause a record number of people to donate to MoveOn in the past 24 hours alone, to finance their next ad.

So aside from a clever-attention getter, the fallout from the use of "Betray-Us" in the NYT ad was like manna from heaven.

55. They deserved every donation and positive e-mail they got from us, or any
of the other disgusted Americans who took Congress' rebuke of the right to free speech as a wake-up call about the importance of MoveOn and the other organizations who are out there every day representing us in a way our do-nothing, gutless Congress never will.

Bravo, MoveOn!!!

57. Picking up a cobblestone
Donating 25 at a time as motivated by my anger (frequent). Each one as satisfying as picking up a cobblestone and making it count. Kind of like pay and throw as you go.

Move On makes the catapult, I will provide the ammo.

59. Maybe for those
who can't afford it, they should send smaller amounts, even $5.00, to swell the rank of MoveOn supporters.

61. sending $100 today
So my family can be part of the group that got moveon from one million dollars to two million dollars!

"The People" opening their check books seems to be one of the few ways left in our "democracy" to tell our elected leaders to GO FUCK THEMSELVES!

62. Why is obvious
Because we thought when we voted in Dems, they would sop Bush's destruction of America, but they didn't. They did not lead, they just morphed into beltway pols. Well, Move on is speaking the truth and the majority of americans see that, and sees that our Washington leaders are playing politics and not fixing things.

68. Donate now...whatever you can....every little bit helps a lot!
If you never donated for before give it a shot...it'll help so much and you'll feel great....doesn't matter how much.

71. I just sent them ANOTHER $100 - that's money the Dems AREN'T getting
Edited on Sat Sep-22-07 05:12 PM by TankLV
because I'm so disgusted with their action this week.

MoveOn represents ME better than any Democrat in government does - that's for sure...

Gee - where are all the wussies and prissy pants who scolded MoveOn these past few weeks - and that one fucking CANADIAN "hound" who trys to tell US Democrats how we should act.

Not a one on this thread - good!!!

Hurrah for MoveOn!
