Another Soldier Known for Writings On War Dies in Iraq (Freeper's Son)
Edited on Fri Sep-21-07 04:41 PM by RamboLiberal
Source: Editor & Publisher

Earlier this month, two of seven soldiers who had penned an Op-Ed for The New York Times that expressed skepticism about the war in Iraq were killed in a vehicle accident there. Now another soldier whose writings on the war, but with a more pro-war view, were widely circulated has died in another non-combat related incident.

He is Sgt. Edmund "Eddie" Jeffers. He died on Wednesday in Taqqadum of injuries suffered from an unspecified accident that is under investigation, the Army said.

Jeffers, 23, was in the 2nd Infantry Division’s 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team. This was his second tour of duty in Iraq.

He wrote an essay, "Hope Rides Alone," backing the war in February for the conservative Free Republic web site that gained wide notice. He suggested that the American public was ungrateful.

“America has lost its will to fight," he wrote. “It has lost its will to defend what is right and just in the world...Let’s stop all the political nonsense, let’s stop bickering, let’s stop all the bad news and let’s stand and fight! Isn’t that what America is about anyway?”

Unspecified accident - I'm not going there in an initial post. RIP Sgt. Jeffers - at least you weren't a keyboard commando like most of the Freepers.

On edit - here's link to what he wrote at Free Republic. Read the whole thing - first part is poetic and seems he's exploring the dark moments of the soul - but the rest is hateful to those like us.

Hope Rides Alone
By Eddie Jeffers
I stare out into the darkness from my post, and I watch the city burn to the ground. I smell the familiar smells, I walk through the familiar rubble, and I look at the frightened faces that watch me pass down the streets of their neighborhoods. My nerves hardly rest; my hands are steady on a device that has been given to me from my government for the purpose of taking the lives of others.

I sweat, and I am tired. My back aches from the loads I carry. Young American boys look to me to direct them in a manner that will someday allow them to see their families again...and yet, I too, am just a boy....my age not but a few years more than that of the ones I lead.

I am stressed, I am scared, and I am paranoid...because death is everywhere. It waits for me, it calls to me from around street corners and windows, and it is always there. There are the demons that follow me, and tempt me into thoughts and actions that are not my own...but that are necessary for survival.

I've made compromises with my humanity. And I am not alone in this. Miles from me are my brethren in this world, who walk in the same streets...who feel the same things, whether they admit to it or not and to think, I volunteered for this...

And I am ignorant to the rest of the world...or so I thought.

He most likely committed suicide.

let’s stand and fight! Isn’t that what America is about anyway?”

He would have made a good storm trooper.

25. sounds like us
"I don't know, if you asked me what America is all about, I wouldn't say that standing up and fighting is it. Freedom from government oppression - which includes questioning the government's motives and decisions, including the reasons for war, not just blindly standing up and fighting - would be tops on my list. I love my country, but I constantly question my government. "Stand up and fight?" Sure, but first, let's be sure that we're standing up and fighting for the right thing. Frankly, I look at this Iraq war and all of the taxpayers' money being spent, and I get a feel for why the American colonists revolted against Britain."

ya know one thing that would build solidarity between voting blocks would be for us to realize that were mostly just different on social things but the majority of issues we kind of see eye to eye (health care, out of control gov, education, etc) maybe we should start a thread or two and invite some freepers over their or go to the free republic and post over their

May Sgt. Jeffers be at peace.

He put his life on the line for what he believed in, and for that I honor him.

12. My thoughts are with the dead soldier. I have no sympathy for his freeper family that put him there.
Edited on Fri Sep-21-07 06:09 PM by IanDB1
The soldier kid did what all the chickenhawks wouldn't.

His sacrifice is noble.

Wasted and pointless, but noble.

His parents' sacrifice is deserved.

Maybe NOW they will learn.

Every Freeper deserves a GOLD STAR.

When they stand beside Gold Star Moms for Peace.... THEN they will have my sympathy.

His Freeper parents killed him just as surely as anyone else did.

21. What do you know about his parents?
Did they make him go? Freeper or not, he's a human being. That was uncalled for.

he volunteered and served. That alone is worth my respect.

8. He says: "I've made compromises with my humanity."
But then, he's a Freeper, so that's to be expected.

To my mind, it is more odious to compromise one's country or one's own family than to compromise one's humanity.

I feel sorry for anyone who has to admit that about himself. Which is just another of the million reasons I hate this war.

9. If you compromise your humanity, you compromise everything of value.

At least if you're proud and happy about it, because you swallowed the Administration's line whole. Many out there are the most unfortunate kind of victims. Good souls caught between a rock and a hard place, seeing no way out, and doing what they have to as soldiers.

13. So, the mortality rate of "the seven authors" is now 42%.
That's rather higher than the background rate for soldiers in Iraq. Hard not to wonder what's up with that.

19. Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but it appears that someone at
Free Republic received that letter in an email and posted it. I didn't see anything to show that the soldier himself posted this letter. I didn't read all of the responses, so maybe I missed something.

24. RIP, Mr. Jeffers. And peace to your family.

Sorry, but this writing is nonsense. It presents no purpose for the war, just pugulism.

I hope he finds peace in the long sleep.
