Missive from James Carville
Edited on Sat Sep-22-07 01:53 AM by LaStrega
He writes:

Dear Amberlynne,

I want to let you in on a not-so-secret secret:
George Bush ain't the decider. Not anymore.

We're the deciders, and we don't need to wait until November 2008 to decide to strengthen our stick-thin majority in the Senate.

Republicans have to defend 22 incumbents whose records are, frankly, indefensible. On top of that, there are three seats that are wide open. We've already got some amazing candidates, and Chuck Schumer is out there recruiting more each day.

It's our job - heck, it's our patriotic duty - to make sure those candidates have everything they need to get themselves elected to the Senate. As a dedicated Democrat, you know what an important time this is.

You know that long before our team is judged at the ballot box, we face the judgment of a fast-approaching quarterly filing report. You have been with us every step of the way, and now the end of quarter is in just 10 days. The DSCC needs to meet their $2 million goal, and giving now shows our Republican opponents that we've got what it takes to win.

Click here to donate $50, $75 or more to help our candidates lay the foundation for victory. Building up those war chests early is so important that if you contribute by September 30, a group of Democratic senators will triple your donation.

I never thought I'd say this, but George Bush's rubber stamp is running out of ink.

Incumbents in Colorado, Nebraska, and Virginia are running for the exits instead of running for re-election. Those guys get to leave on their own terms, more or less. I respect that.

But there's a lot more who need to leave, and they're going to leave on our terms.

Last year, the DSCC ran the biggest mid-term get-out-the-vote program in their history: 300,000 phone calls in Montana, 100,000 doors knocked on in Rhode Island, 4,500 volunteers in Missouri on Election Day, and the list goes on. That work paid off, because we won. But even then, it was only by a hair.

As a guy who doesn't have a single one on his head, I know the value of a hair. But ol' Corporal Cueball here would love to see a bigger victory than that this time around.

It's within our reach, but we can't do it without committed Democrats like you. Help the DSCC reach $2 million by September 30.

Click here to donate $50, $75 or more to throw your support behind Democratic candidates. If you contribute by September 30, a group of Democratic senators will triple your donation.

Two dollars for every dollar you give. That's a heck of a deal. But the best deal will come when Democrats have a strong, working majority in the Senate. America needs that, and so will our next president.

Come next November, we're going to reap what we sow. Like I said, we're the deciders. Let's decide now to plant the seeds for a big victory.

It's on,

James Carville

P.S. Click here to donate $50, $75 or more to help our candidates lay the foundation for victory. Building up those war chests early is so important that if you contribute by September 30, a group of Democratic senators will triple your donation. {end}

Dear James,

In the past months of 2007 I've contributed to the DSCC, in all, $350. Me. A single mom. I support my daughter and my sister to boot. I have a mortgage. I have car payments. I have credit card payments. I have the usual bills my fellow Americans have. Hell, I give $5/month to DU. I gave $25 to MoveOn.org ... and I'll keep contributing to DU and MoveOn.org {et. al.} 'cause I feel my money is going toward something good, something powerful, something that matters.

"I never thought I'd say this, but George Bush's rubber stamp is running out of ink." Oh, really? Hmmm ... James, I've not seen that. Seems you're all bending to his rubber stamp whenever he's ready to wield it.

Um. James? Guess what. I'm not giving you fuckers another dime until you do what we goddamned elected you for. STAND UP TO W. Stop being a bunch of pussies and DO IT. And guess what else, James. I won't vote for you pansies again if you neglect to honor the wishes of your constituents. Nancy, put impeachment ON THE TABLE. And the rest of you, fight tooth and nail to DEMAND the restoration of Habeas Corpus. Oh, and, while you're at that ... fucking restore our Constitutional rights and DEMAND a stop to illegal wiretapping. And, hows about that goddamned Iraqi occupation and possible attack on Iran?!

pssssssst ... DO SOMETHING! Heck, it's your PATRIOTIC DUTY!

Sincerely, Amberlynne

2. The ready excuse is, "We don't have the votes to overcome a veto."
Sorry guys, that is not the problem. The problem is the blue dog Democrats who vote with the republicans. They are the problem. Are they so weak and so insecure that they can't go home to their constituents and defend truly Democratic votes? What is with the Landrieus and the characters from North and South Dakota to name just a few? And what is with Bayh of Indiana? Can't he go home and say with pride that he voted against certain Republican measures because they are just wrong and not consistent with the American Constitution or American way. That is the problem in Congress. We want leaders who bring their constituents with them, not followers who live in dread of the next election when they might be defeated for doing what is right.

5. Nice.
I addressed my reply to the DSCC. Told them they needed to get out of the beltway more if they thought having Carville be their frontman was a good idea. Elaborated a bit on why it is a BAD idea, told them they'll get nothing from me or likely anyone I know. Signed off with "Get ye to the Clue store".

The only Senate race I'm supporting is Levin's. He doesn't need much help from me though. I've donated and worked on fundraisers for him and will continue to do so. The bulk of my political efforts will go toward local candidates and local party building. The caucuses can go bark up another tree.

6. Good job!
If we all stop enabling them to screw us over eventually we can make some movement on this.

Corporal Cueball lost a lot of rank with that letter.

11.  I'll bet he's getting a LOT of letters like that, because I know I sent him one as well.
I told him I chose to contribute to Move On instead of the DSCC this month. I said I would consider resuming contributions to the DSCC when they actually FORCED the Republicans to filibuster on important bills such as those dealing with ending the war or restoring habeas corpus. I said that when they refused to fund George Bush's Iraq fiasco by not allowing the bill to come up for a vote, they would DEFINITELY see some money from me.

The timing on that email to the Democratic base was especially ill-timed given the events of the past week.

13. Carville played a big role in Kerry's quick concession-from TPM:
Did Carville Tip Bush Off to Kerry Strategy (Woodward)
By M.J. Rosenberg | bio

?On page 344, Woodward describes the doings at the White House in the early morning hours of Wednesday, the day after the '04 election.

Apparently, Kerry had decided not to concede. There were 250,000 outstanding ballots in Ohio.

So Kerry decides to fight. In fact, he considers going to Ohio to camp out with his voters until there is a recount. This is the last thing the White House needs, especially after Florida 2000.

So what happened?

James Carville gets on the phone with his wife, Mary Matalin, who is at the White House with Bush.

"Carville told her he had some inside news. The Kerry campaign was going to challenge the provisional ballots in Ohio -- perhaps up to 250,000 of them. 'I don't agree with it, Carville said. I'm just telling you that's what they're talking about.'

"Matalin went to Cheney to report...You better tell the President Cheney told her."

Matalin does, advising Bush that "somebody in authority needed to get in touch with J. Kenneth Blackwell, the Republican Secretary of State in Ohio who would be in charge of any challenge to the provisional votes." An SOS goes out to Blackwell.

The rest is history.
