O'Reilly amazed by civility in Harlem restaurant
O'Reilly amazed by civility in Harlem restaurant
09.22.07 -- 10:29AMBy Steve Benen

At a minimum, I can't help but think Bill O'Reilly needs to get out more. He explained the other day, on the air, that he and Al Sharpton had dinner together in Harlem, and O'Reilly was amazed by what he found. Regrettably, he wasn't talking about the food.

"We went to Sylvia's, a very famous restaurant in Harlem. I had a great time, and all the people up there are tremendously respectful. They all watch The Factor. You know, when Sharpton and I walked in, it was like a big commotion and everything, but everybody was very nice.

"And I couldn't get over the fact that there was no difference between Sylvia's restaurant and any other restaurant in New York City. I mean, it was exactly the same, even though it's run by blacks, primarily black patronship."

On the same program, O'Reilly was describing his experience to NPR's Juan Williams. "There wasn't one person in Sylvia's who was screaming, 'M-Fer, I want more iced tea,'" O'Reilly said, adding, "You know, I mean, everybody was -- it was like going into an Italian restaurant in an all-white suburb in the sense of people were sitting there, and they were ordering and having fun. And there wasn't any kind of craziness at all."

people in the U.S. share with him.

Racism is a very real problem contrary to popular belief.... one that is enjoying a revival of sorts under this administration.

:hi:

But it will only be addressed, if this kind of mentality is exposed, and confronted.

66. Very true.
I know that our town is very white. The races really don't mix enough. It's not just whites and blacks but the Latinos and the Japanese families working in management for the Japanese companies in town.

Still, what an amazingly racist expectation.

IF they watched the factor they would treat like and MST3K episode. They'd be sitting in front of their televisions commenting on the bad facts (instead of the bad acting) and about how bad their script is. At least that's the way we watch it.

He was shocked that there are black people who don't act like thugs.

I think it's also interesting to listen to the news coverage of the march in Jena. Some reporters seemed surprised that there was no violence and that there were black people who could act in a civil manner.

stupidese to a stupid audience and has no shame at all about doing so.

To be honest, I have often thought about how easy it would be to make real money if I had no scruples (though I have never thought about actually doing it--because I do have a sense of decency). I have some talent as a speaker and a writer. I even have a relatively large fan base for my online writings. If I were willing to cater to the worst human impulses, I bet I could make a fair amount of money.

I honestly think a lot of the writers, politicians, and other public figures on the dark side made exactly that calculation and deliberately decided to do whatever they had to, without shame, to make the money or gain the power and status. We know W did. He has told friends and political cronies on various occasions that he hates the "whackos" (his own words) on the religious right. Yet he is perfectly willing to play to their prejudices. He also, quite apparently, has no particular problem with race or sexual orientation, yet he is willing to play to his base's prejudices on those matters.

Laura also did the same thing. She was a liberal Democrat who switched sides when her meal ticket came along.

Daddy Bush was once a moderate Republican in favor of reproductive rights and gay rights, until he realized he had to pander to get into the VP slot and then the presidency. Bob Dole--same thing. Pander to the worst to get the nomination and to wield power.

In Blinded by the Right David Brock mentions the lure of big money as one of the things that attracts so many young people to the ranks of the vast right wing conspiracy.

Even "our" people--like Hillary--are willing to say and do things they don't really believe in when the chance to collect money or power comes along. She has gotten in bed with Murdoch and the AEI. Look at all the Dems who voted to betray the middle class and poor people with the bankruptcy bill and the IWR vote, and even recently with the vote against MoveOn.

If you have no shame, you can do anything, and when the struggle for social, economic, or political survival, power, and position has no rules of decency, anyone who tries to obey such rules gets destroyed.

I remember, back in the 70's when they had forced busing here in Boston to integrate the schools, BillO was a newsreader on the 5 o'clock news. He rarely showed this side of himself at that time, so I thought maybe his "FOX" persona was a bit of a put-on, but he IS a flaming racist!

"There wasn't one person in Sylvia's who was screaming, 'M-Fer, I want more iced tea,' O'Reilly said..." That's as racist as it gets out of the mouth of a public personality (unless you're Mel Gibson, that is...)

Ugh. That is U G L Y .

But, I could be wrong. I do look at it this way, though: look at the "eye-opening" experience Billo got out of it. Being there for him could only have been a good thing, but for Sharpton -- what a waste of time. At least he got a great meal out of it! (Sylvia's food rocks!)

65. O'Reilly isn't a racist, he's way to apathetic to be one
You can tell from his remarks that he has absolutely no interaction with "the blacks".

He reminds me of how some people from the bay area view my home town, Oakland. Bill is about as racist as shrub, neither of them give a damn about any one who isn't part of their strata of our society, or ever have any significant interaction with 'those people'. It isn't worth getting angry about, neither of them are worth spit. I imagine that's why Sharpton couldn't be bothered to slap the ingn'ant mofo.

It would be sort of amusing to see O'Reilly chow down at one of our finer eateries here in O-town.

I was going to excuse him at the first paragraph, because he might figure blacks are disproportionately liberal and if they watch the Factor they know he's not.

But the second paragraph proves him a racist jerk. "Even though it's run by blacks?" That meant it should be different, in his fevered excuse for a mind?

86. When my family first moved to NC
it was a hot evening, so we were eating supper on the screened back porch. My folks heard a noise in the house and went to investigate, with me bringing up the rear.

There was an old biddy standing in the living room, gawking. "Why, you Jews live just like white people do!"

Welcome to the south.

I am delighted to say things have changed for the better since then. However, that's the mindset that is at work throughout the far right.

I wish I could say I'm surprised at cloddish comments like those, but I'm not.

I've been educated over time and know that there is a lot a white person takes for granted or just doesn't know, and I hope he's actually open to learning something here, but the dude could have watched a few movies, read a book or something and gotten at least a CLUE that skin color is just a portion of the human experience and isn't the end-all-be-all factor in determining behavior.

I don't believe he is coming to any new revelation, but he's justifying his attacks on minorities and others by saying how open and appreciative he actually is. Based on his previous behavior, I'd say this is very calculated move to take off heat of some soon to be future racial attack so he can point back and say that all the blacks who "act white" can be excepted or something equally stupid.

135. Holy cow, what an assh*
I am totally stunned that he would even think it appropriate to talk like this on the radio. Surely even in his lizard brain he knows this is a racist thing to say, but to actually come out and discuss this like its a viewpoint worthy of discussion! This is all kinds of f*ed up.

144. I dismiss him as another WASP caught up in stereotypes
And it's obvious he felt comfortable in an audience where he could put his foot in his mouth and expose his bigotry.

Are some DU-ers so fucking tone deaf that they can't recognize sarcasm without the visual aid of the sarcasm smilie? Well...that's their problem, not mine. Idiots.

Black Panthers in the corner booth? Looters taking a break? Gangsta rappers complaining about the food?

What a putz.

158. That was a real window into his head, And it wasn't a pretty site.
And he's completely clueless about how soul-killing insulting that was.

I thought the phrase "not knowing whether to laugh or cry" was a metaphor.

But I am torn between laughing at this idiot or crying for people on whose hospitality he took a big, stinking shit.

159. not surprising ...
the only reason I caught this comment of his was because I was visiting friends, and they had the TV turned for a moment to Oh'Really when Katrina hit ...

all I could say was, "no he didn't" ... and, my friends said, "yes he did" ...
... he said:

You've probably been wondering why you've been seeing a lot of Black people on TV the last few days.

I may not have the quote down pat, but that's, basically, what he said.

My jaw still wants to drop to the floor. :wow:

162. This is OFFENSIVE in so many ways.
What an idiot. He really said those things out loud and into a microphone? It doesn't surprise me he thinks that, but to announce it on the radio? OMG

He probably thinks he's being complementary! How embarrassing.
