and I was amazed at how articulate he was even though he was Black. He was even nice and knew what he was doing. When he first walked in I was a bit concerned, but after seeing how tremendously respectful he was, I figured, what the heck, let him fix the Frig. AND not one time did he use the word M-Fer.

I used to work in a State facility that accepted applications for Nursing Home Care for the elderly. We used to get a lot of the applicants family to file the papers.

One day I was sitting in for a few minutes for the person who ran to the bathroom. I took two applications before she returned.

When I put them on the desk I just layed them there in no order, the receptionist came up to me and said....which of the two families came in first. I looked at her and said I don't know. She said "How could you not know who was first and who was second"..one family was black and the other white. I typed the applications and never paid attention which was black and which was white.

I come from and integrated family and live in an integrated community. Not just black and white but both my family and my community includes people of many backgrounds. I am of mixed race and have a lot of difficulty answering the question about my race whenever it's asked. -- and though I am often derided for saying so, it does actually take a lot of effort on my part to even notice race. I have to make a point of it.

Edit to add, I do certainly notice whether someone is light or dark skinned, but my brain does not automatically assign a race to someone based on that. I have to make a point of doing so. If someone asks me "is so and so black or white" I have to stop and picture them and think about it - and even then sometimes have difficulty.

I was amazed at how articulate they were. I was a little nervous about the automatic weapons and ski masks, but not even once did they call me a M-Fer when they ordered me to go face down on the floor while checking my photo- and biometric ID against their lists of registered approved voters. I figured heck, let's let them run the Diebold® primaries and generals from now on. They sure seemed to know what they were doing.
