A Top U.S. General in Iraq Blames Public's Antiwar Views on the Media

By E&P Staff

Published: September 21, 2007 3:10 PM ET

NEW YORK Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch, commander of the Army's 3rd Infantry Division, said Thursday, back in the U.S. on leave at Fort Stewart, that the war in "If the American people are informed properly," Lynch told reporters after he arrived home on leave, "I believe they will be supportive of the mission. But they're not getting the right story. As a result, they're anti the war."

The media use a "filter" that downplays information about American successes: "All I'm seeing when I watch TV ... is the bad news and not the good news."

After listing severall alleged signs of progress, Lynch said, "But you never see that by watching Fox, CNN and NBC....

"We would not have put soldiers in harm's way if we didn't think this was a winnable mission," he said.

1. damn librul media. If not for them,
the germans would have never bombed Pearl; General Custer would have surrounded them dirtbag immigrants, instead of the other way around; we would have shot them nasty sky-jacking Iraqis out of the sky BEFORE they hit the Pentagon; the USS Maine would not have been sunk; and, We wouldn't have lost Nam to those damn Koreans.

The Librul Media is at fault for all of that. If only we have decent, honest corporations owning the media and fixing their ways.

7. Yes, the media is the problem, even though BUSH HAS GOTTEN EVERYTHING HE WANTED

It's the media

It's the liberals

It's the traitorous American citizenry who don't understand.

It's the phase of the moon.

No. It is not. It is the criminal, thieving, war profiteering corporate Bush/Cheney administration that started a war on deliberate lies, so they could STEAL.

8. "The Stab in the Back" was a winning meme for Hitler.
Of course, the generals and planners of WWI were brilliant heroes only deprived of glorious victory by the leftists and Jews.

You lost, general. Now cop some more tinware for your chest and get your job at General Dynamics, or Halliburton, or Boeing, and write a book about the Great Betrayal.

10. What? The media doesn't suck your tit enough already? Well, then,
let's just turn all the media outlets over to the govt, call the organ "Pravda," and be done with it. Hey, wait, a better plan is to have only your corp buddies own all media outlets, blast your point of view 24/7, and then you go complain about the liberal media. Now, that's the ticket....your view is the one that gets out, corps get their money, and you get to whine a bit on teevee.

25. You, of course, know the problem with that statement
There is no greater friend to the war than Fox News--and this general says they're not supportive enough of the war.

I'm not sure how you COULD be more supportive of the war than is Fox, but this general thinks otherwise.

In reality, there is nothing that can be done to please this general. If they told the unvarnished truth about the war, it would be denounced as liberal spin. If they tell the Fox News version of the war--everything is going great, all we need is to extract four or five hundred more billion dollars and five or six more civil liberties, and we'll have those nasty Iraqi Insurgent Terrorists on the run I'm here to tell ya--this general will claim Fox is still unsupportive of the effort in theater.

12. From 2002 to 2006 the media did nothing but applaud and treat the military as GODS in human form
Edited on Sat Sep-22-07 01:13 PM by kenny blankenship
and backed the war aims, the war reports, and the war lies as if they were Gospel truth. They still behave with slavish deference to the military even if the truth about the war has managed to slip out over time. But four years of deification, absolute uncritical faith, and frenzied sycophantic applause is not enough for this asshole. It can never be enough. His kind wants obedience from everyone and no questions forever.

13. A list of comments from FAIR "Iraq War's Pollyanna pundits"
Edited on Sat Sep-22-07 01:29 PM by EVDebs
http://www.commondreams.org/news2006/0315-01.htm

"We're proud of our president. Americans love having a guy as president, a guy who has a little swagger, who's physical, who's not a complicated guy like Clinton or even like Dukakis or Mondale, all those guys, McGovern. They want a guy who's president. Women like a guy who's president. Check it out. The women like this war. I think we like having a hero as our president. It's simple. We're not like the Brits."
(MSNBC's Chris Matthews, 5/1/03)

and my personal fave,

May 2, 2003
—"The war winds down, politics heats up.... Picture perfect. Part Spider-Man, part Tom Cruise, part Ronald Reagan. The president seizes the moment on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific."
(PBS's Gwen Ifill on Bush's speech)

(this weblink above is a goldmine of comments btw !)

We're "not getting the right story"? Hmm. Does he mean the propaganda is not being properly catapulted or is he just unhappy with the truth? Just asking.

The mediawhores helped tremendously to get your bushit war started, rick.

Maybe there aren't any fucking success stories coming outta bush's misbegotten War On Iraq. Did the media make up more deaths of Soldiers and Iraqis then have actually happened? More bombings, More Maimings? More HOrror?

Edited to add: I wonder if Congress will censure me for that remark.
