NRA stunt backfiring on Mayor Nine Eleveniani: "That was just weird!"

September 22, 2007 -- Hold on, it's Judi. That's the stunning line Rudy Giuliani told an already-skeptical crowd of gun enthusiasts yesterday when he abruptly interrupted his speech - to take a call from his wife. The interruption drew awkward laughs and some outrage from the 400 National Rifle Association members on hand in a Washington, D.C., hotel ballroom.

Because of his history of supporting gun control as mayor, Giuliani had already entered the room with a bull's-eye on him. Then halfway into his speech, Giuliani's cellphone rang. He dug into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

"Wait just a second," he told the perplexed crowd. "This is my wife calling, I think. Hello, dear," he said in a syrupy voice. "I'm talking to the members of the NRA right now. Would you like to say hello?" he said to confused chuckles. "I love you, and I'll give you a call as soon as I'm finished. OK, have a safe trip. Bye-bye. Talk to you later, dear. I love you."

Initially, people thought it was a joke. There was some polite applause and laughter after he hung up.
As Giuliani tucked his phone back into his suit pocket, he told the audience it was better to answer his wife's calls."This is one of the great blessings of the modern age. You're always available," he said. "Or, maybe it isn't." Clearly, some NRA members didn't see it as any kind of blessing.

"You mean you can't turn off your phone?" steamed Lacrecia Crowell, of Dardanelle, Ark. "I can't believe it!" "It just seems to me like he didn't take the group that seriously," added her husband, Art. Another NRA member muttered, "That was just weird."

1. I'm surprised the NY Post published that.
Fox News has been kind to Giuliani.

Maybe while they're both owned by Rupert Murdoch, Roger Ailes is more sympathetic to Giuliani than the Editor-in-Chief of the NY Post (whoever that is.)

3. It was staged. Rudy wants the world to know that his wife
is more important than anything else. He has been dissed as not having "Family Values" so this was
a public show that he does. After a few minutes, most of the audience probably knew it was pandering if their IQ was above 90 & their grey cells were active.

5. Isn't there a video out in circulation of him pulling the same stunt at another event?
I know I read that somewhere.

7. Ah ha! TPM's got the scoop (as usual)
On the other hand, it turns out that this isn't the first time this has happened to Rudy, whose past failed marriages could turn out to be a liability among conservative voters. A rival campaign has sent us some video of Rudy receiving a very similar "surprise" call from Judy at the podium during an event last June. And he did the "I love you" thing then, too.

What a goober.

12. LOL
Whoever is running your campaign, Rudy, keep him/her. In fact, take more calls from Judy. Take one at the next debate. Show the world and the nation that you will interrupt anything to take a call from your wife. ;)
