Paper Refuses to Run Anti-Bush Ad (mission accomplished)
Paper Refuses to Run Anti-Bush Ad
Submitted by davidswanson on Sat, 2007-09-22 21:43. Media

www.worldcantwait.org

“A belligerent President Bush comes to the United Nations to impress upon the world that the U.S. is in the Middle East to stay, that the war on terror will be endless, and to threaten a murderous war on Iran.”

This message is being censored. We’re calling on you to stand up to suppression of political dissent.

On Thursday Metro newspaper in NYC refused to run an ad headlined “Who is the Real Nuclear Threat” from the World Can’t Wait – Drive Out the Bush regime in its September 21 issue. The reason given by the publisher was that the content was “too inflammatory” for the prominent back page. On Friday, a second ad “One Million Dead in Iraq” was first rejected for placement on the September 25 back page explicitly because of its content. Then they offered placement on an inside page at a price almost four times higher than what was originally agreed upon.

This move by Metro is undoubtedly related to the “watch what you say” atmosphere created by the White House. Also on Thursday, George Bush said to the White House press, “I thought the (MoveOn) ad was disgusting. I felt like the ad was an attack not only on General Petraeus, but on the U.S. military. And I was disappointed that not more leaders in the Democrat Party spoke out strongly against that kind of ad. And that leads me to come to this conclusion: that most Democrats are afraid of irritating a left-wing group like MoveOn.org -- or more afraid of irritating them than they are of irritating the United States military. That was a sorry deal.”

3. You do know this happens all the time
it happened before the MoveOn ad with depressing frequency. The claim that this is undoubtedly related, isn't supported with evidence.

And I am certainly not about to write off Senator Leahy because he voted for the crappy resolution.

8. I wouldn't expect you to..and I'm
not, either but that vote should never have come up.

Leahy does surprise me, though, and so did the Nays from Clinton and Schumer!

22. I've been sitting here, lost in thought inspired by your last sentence.
What is it that is actually going on which places this gulf between us and those who claim to represent us?
What I keep seeing is that things really have changed; people have changed, or maybe mutated. And not just since nine-eleven, either.

Senator Leahy, for all his honor and statesmanship, is a member of a bygone generation of politicians. Theirs was the a time when one's mother in law could intimidate her daughter across the room by a look or a glare.
Not so, today. Now, with the blatant lying and hypocrisy, right there on the senate floor, totally oblivious of reality, its like she'd have to walk across the room and start slapping somebody around.

That's just the way it is--those possessed of honor cannot see, or allow themselves to see, the people they work with to do this higher calling are creeps of the first order. The berserkers, Huckleberry the Sharks, the precious mendacity purveyors are automatically at an advantage: they are not restrained by a conscience.

"Action speaks louder than words" Show me.....All I hear is a lot of talk and posturing...What has changed? The criminals are still off Scott Free...The Iraqi War has even escalated under Democratic Control..Iran is almost a given...But MoveOn.org was sure given their come-upence...Oh Boy....Stop the Funding or face the fact of being irrelevent. Shit or get off the pot....They have been sitting on that pot for a long damn time now...

16. 7 years? Try 11 years.
The anti-Clinton operation followed by the anti-Gore operation in 99.

And you could say that the fourth estate has been MIA since the Reagan years. It's been a gradual and complete process since then.

34. And why not, they're all owned by the same people. Media companies
are owned by the very corporations and individuals that the war, the looting of the treasury, the destruction of our government, etc., is being/was done for. Democratic or Repulik, conservative or liberal, black, white, hispanic, or asian, makes little difference, this is about one issue and one alone, ruling class versus the rest of us.

Who will control this nation is the question, all else is distraction.

They're not getting it. All this'll do is push the mainstream audience, which is getting more and more left by the day, towards other sources of information.

21. Well
....newspapers are not obligated to run any ads. They pick and chose as they see fit. Period.

This is not a free speech issue.

On the other hand, fairness is another issue.

message entirely. Those with their eyes on reality should take note. The People are not sitting down and taking the BS from DC.

32. From the link.. Who to call, who to write, what to say
Here is a message for you to send the publisher of The Metro :

We know you are feeling the chill of the threat to publishers because of the MoveOn ad.

1) If your reason for refusing to run the World Can’t Wait ad is just monetary, then shame on you.

2) If you have political objections to the content, we would like to know them.

3) If you are worried about the chill Bush is trying to send through the advertising world, and you want to stand up to it, there are thousands of us ready to support you.

Call the Metro Publisher Daniel Magnus 212-952-1500 to ask that they publish on Tuesday 9/25.

You can reach World Can’t Wait at 866 973 4463.

And, donate generously to get these ads published in more newspaper. Write me if you have ideas and can help.

Debra Sweet, Director, The World Can’t Wait – Drive Out the Bush Regime
