They all know. What's tough is getting them to realize that bush represents the new rethuglican and if they don't like him then they need to rethink their allegiance. Anybody else run into this?

1. rethink?
they don't rethink any thing. They take a position and defend it even in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. To say they are wrong would mean they are wrong about everyone and everything even god and Jesus and Michael Moore.

3. I respect what you're saying, but I know a fair number of non-religious
republicans (you're right about MM, though... that's hopeless) who believe in personal responsibility, small government, and a sound economic policy. These are the people I imagine could be reached if... if... if... meh. My father is a republican who was once a libertarian. He despises Bush but does that mean he would ever vote for a Democrat? Hell no. He's under the illusion that the republicans represent what they once represented which, while abhorrent, wasn't nearly so abhorrent as it is now.

call himself an independent, he lives in DC where he is attending law school and highly intelligent and yet sometimes it takes a bit more of a push to get even the most intelligent ones to rethink their positions regarding political leanings.

4. I'm an independent who votes Democratic because I won't waste a vote
in these critical times. Anything you can do to open peoples' eyes is good. You're right though, intelligence isn't a reliable marker when it comes to guessing political persuasion.
