GM, UAW Said to Be Close on Health Care
If they setup this trust to manage healthcare for about 500K GM people, wouldn't that make it Medicare 2.0? which is a good thing. GM (and maybe the other two) can pay into it, then the Union and the employees? Seems like a decent idea.

You know the Union is going to negotiate a tough deal on pricing with the evil HMOs...Am I missing anything so far?

This trust can bring in Ford and Chrysler employees, then maybe airline employees, then others...Then merge all of them into one big Medicare for everyone?

2. UAW members and retirees had a good deal on healthcare
Maybe not as good as Senators and Representatives, but still not bad.

UAW is trying to preserve as much of the benefit as possible. GM is trying to ditch the financial obligation.

In a way, I wish GM all the best. If more workers and retirees lose their health care benefits, there will be more pressure to get universal health care as a federal benefit to all.

This trust will not be for everyone, just the UAW members.
