the crusaders came to the holy land to claim it as their own. Today what land is more holy than oil fields? There is no doubt that the people behind this seizure of Iraq would not shed a tear if every last iraqi were to just go away.

You're right about the Crusaders; it wasn't all a spiritual cause with them, especially the "nobility"; it was also about claiming trade deals.
