Reporter Grills Perino on Use of Blackwater
By Paul Kiel - September 21, 2007, 4:28PM

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino had a hard time with questions about the State Department's use of Blackwater during this afternoon's press briefing:

Q Why do you have to have private contractors who have, on the face of it, a lousy record?

MS. PERINO: Well, I think that there is because -- I think that is because there is a need. I don't know why it was originally set up that way....

More from the briefing below.

Q Blackwater security resumed limited patrols in Baghdad today. Did it do so under any new instructions from the U.S. government? Do you feel that improved training is required? What do you have to say about this?

MS. PERINO: I think you're going to have to ask the State Department in terms of if there was anything different about their resumption of duties today. I think Tom Casey did some on-the-record speaking this morning about it.

In addition, just remember that we have just set up a joint inquiry commission with the Maliki government, and so we're going to have to take some time to figure out what happened at that event, and then also look at the policy recommendations to see if there's anything that needs to be changed.

3. Something tells me she isn't going to last long..
Her only skill is speaking VERY fast. She probably holds the record for "least substance in the most words in the shortest amount of time".

4. The press has already spoken on this
As Dana Milbank points out, what she says doesn't matter, he'll just enjoy looking at her.

From 8/31/2007 Countdown:

OLBERMANN: And spend it in good health as the old joke goes and meant very seriously here. A last question about your name sake the incoming press secretary, Dana Perino. She got herself into trouble about the misstatements in the White House use of RNCE e-mail accounts. Will she find herself overmatched?

MILBANK: She could. But then so would anybody. What she has a very good relationship off camera and stage with the press known as a straight shooter. She has a lot of good will built up. That will take her a long way. Who would you rather watch, her or Ari Fleischer?

5. She is a good pick from the Bushco perspective
Such a sweet young woman, and if the reporters are aggressive, they're being mean to her and overstepping the bounds of propriety. This may be their last gambit to avoid questions about all their sins. Maybe the press isn't falling for it.
