1. Columbia is right. We need to hear from everybody even our
enemies. One thing that rankled me during the cold war was not being able to access anything Russian other than what was approved by the State Department. At the time I was student and serious about learning global history and politics, yet trying to get hold of any magazine or periodical that was produced in the Soviet Union here in the USA was censored. Yet, when I used to return to SA for my summer vacations, all kinds of Russian media were available including movies. Incidentally, they used to make the best fairy tale, fantasy type movies back in the fifties with fantastic scores by Russian composers. It's too bad Americans had to miss out on them.

3. His students and fellow faculty members are going to have to stand behind him,
and so is every other American in the country who abhors censorship. One person standing alone will get rolled over and squashed. I see a lot of that today of ordinary people and not so ordinary people making a stand because they feel there is an injustice that has been perpetrated and no one will stand up with them even though they may secretly agree with them. I keep thinking of that poor lone Chinese man standing up to the tanks in Tienanmen Square. No one would go and stand with him.
