Can any DUer confirm a report that Newsweek magazine reported Sunday that VP Dick Cheney
... was advocating a plan to have Israel launch missile attacks against Iran's nuclear site, in order to trigger an Iranian reaction which would be used to justify direct U.S. involvement. Apparently Newsweek quotes David Wurmser, until recently Cheney's Middle East adviser and a top neo-con lunatic, telling a group of people: "Cheney had been mulling the idea of pushing for limited Israeli missile strikes against the Iranian nuclear site at Natanz...in order to provoke Tehran into lashing out." Supposedly Newsweek also reports that it had corroborated Wurmser's remarks.

This totally contradicts statement made by Admiral William Fallon, who said in an interview with Al-Jazeera television in Qatar on Friday, that he does not believe that current tensions with Iran will lead to war Admiral Fallon was urging greater emphasis be placed on dialog and diplomacy.

If the Newsweek report is true then these actions my VP Cheney provide a rock solid case for the impeachment of the Vice President! :wtf:

1. There's no reason to believe that Fallon is 'in the loop'
The plan is already drawn up. There are likely enough weapons within operational range to go forward.

7. Exactly. Just like Colin Powell was kept out of the loop because he was against the invasion,
initially...Fallon wouldn't be included in the Iran invasion loop because he's against invading Iran.

11. Fallon would be in the loop because if Iran's struck and
does *anything*, Fallon's the guy who has to have the plans and resources to respond.

14. I would think that would be the case unless Bush at that point relieves Fallon
...of his position and hands naval command to an insider who does have the plan....the Cheney/Bush/neo-con plan!

19. Your assertion assumes a reasoned decision.
History indicates that such is not guaranteed where the Bush administration, and Chaney in particular, is concerned.

4. Bush is still president, no matter what Cheney aspires to.
Cheney can indeed advocate such a plan, but it won't necessarily happen, because, unlike with some other stuff, things on that scale only happen with presidential approval. (And Israel's leadership doesn't seem quite nutty enough to go behind Bush's back to do this and hope Bush doesn't hold a grudge over disrespecting him. That seems to be exactly what Bush holds real grudges about.)

16. George Bush may be president, but he is not a leader, he does what he is told
...and others are pulling the cords and make Bush do what they want done. Find out who is on the ends of those cords and get rid of them!

6. Cheney and his peeps need to be locked up.
If this is what they're planning, which appears to be exactly the case since it's been leaked for weeks now--out of Cheney's own mouth and his mouthpiece Fox News. A pre-emptive strike on Iran would be treason, most especially if all the plans were coming out of the VP's office. Under The Constitution, the VP or even the President do not have the power to order a pre-emptive strike. I hope for everyone's sake that someone "in the know" will fucking stop this insane monster before he nukes Iran. And Bush should be held 100% responsible for letting Dr. Evil run amok.

13. Did you hear Pat Buchanan on McLaughlin today? He said that's all DC is talking about - bombing Iran
He said Cheney is telling everyone that Condi has failed and the AEI and all the rest are busily planning for an attack on Iran. He said it's THE ONLY THING WASHINGTON IS TALKING ABOUT. Buchanan just blurted it out. I was shocked. Judging from the reporting we are getting out of DC you'd think the only things being discussed were Larry Craig and MoveOn.
