Just because we have real adversaries in people whose opinions deserve scrutiny and criticism doesn't mean that we've instantly devolved into a totalitarian state.

Cheney's wet dream: jackbooted thugs monitoring behavior for any little sign of unorthodoxy, citizens swept away for no reason except they fit some profile -- or maybe they don't, other citizens doing a striptease just to board a means of transportation, Room 101 where "the worst thing in the world" is reserved for enemies of the state, perpetual war, unending official lies, history rewritten to support the current version of reality, corruption at the highest levels of the party...

Oh wait... We're already there. Just haven't had my face mashed by a jackboot lately. Guess I'll have to wait for the grand exercise in Portland starting Oct. 15th, when 15,000 thugs from various "security" services and agencies will descend on the city for TopOFF 4/Vigilant Shield, a scenario that involves simulated detonation of a dirty suitcase nuke and subsequent imposition of martial law.

And the Overlord himself will be here, snarling and smirking as the "activists" are rounded up, along with anyone else out after curfew, while the local cops swagger and thrash protesters with unusual zeal as they show the feds what hardasses they are. Or maybe they're auditioning for a gig with Blackwater.

Anyway, here we go. It's either a drill and those of us who smell a rat are just paranoid loons, or it's another one of those exercises that suddenly "goes live," exactly mirroring the drill scenario, and I'll finally get to watch a nuclear fireball -- until my eyes melt.
