when the majority of people are ignorant and look for quick answers to complex problems (you know like the people that thought Kerry lost the debate because he tried to explain things in a rational manner) do you necessarily want the leaders to look at polls and do what the "average slob" wants or do you want the leaders to do what is best for their country? Take an issue like the death penalty, it has never been shown to deter crime, here in France about 48% supports the death penalty, but former President Chirac pushed and got a constitutional amendment making the death penalty unconstitutional (it was illegal but unconstitutional before.) He did this in great political peril because most support for the death penalty comes from the right. In other words a majority of people that vote for his party SUPPORT the death penalty but he did not, and he did what was best for France. If only Sarkozy would do that, but he is a populist who has friends in the media that make "new ideas" popular so that Sarkozy can act on them.
Think about it do you want intelligent rational thought to run your country or gut feelings from the likes of Homer Simpson?

Polls, you did not understand why people in this cartoon did not want a president that looked at polls, i gave some reasons for not wanting a leader that looks at polls. It is not like Bush is not a populist. He played the polls for years.
