A quick question about the last primary season on DU
I missed the 2004 presidential primary. Would those of you who were here for it say it was about the same so far as this one? Or is this one getting nastier than 2004.

From the stories I've heard about 2004 this one would seem to be about the same. Which is to be expected considering we're a politically passionate group.

I'm asking because I've seen a few post by people who predate my here questioning what DU has become this season.

2. I imagine that's human nature
I'm trying to avoid most of it this time around.

My rule is, if I feel like making an emotional reply walk away and do something else.

3. It was nasty, but this one seems to be starting much earlier.
Way nasty, way early.

7. That was one of the things that prompted my question
I was wondering if the extremely early beginnings of this season had hastened the effect here.

6. Kind of interesting when you see how it all played out.
Maybe the 6th sense was on point! Like it or not there is a bit of confusion over his speedy concession. Peace, Kim

8. I gathered that rather quickly after the election
It was extremely emotional for a while, as I'm sure you remember, and everyone was tossing blame anyplace they thought it might stick.

5. Just think how mixed primary supporters are these days vs. the past.
In the past if you supported someone you would intermittently run into the opposition. Not all day long. Seeing as how we are all together here during the season..we are doing okay.

9. That's a really good point.
I hadn't considered that fact, but it does make sense.

So far it doesn't seem all that bad to me here. I was really just wondering due to some things that I've read.

10. I think it was worse back then...
Although the season was shorter, it was a lot nastier. There were even a few shitstirrers who used the IM system to plot against DU and plan another website. Yeah, it got really nasty, and personal.

That kind of shitstirrer seems to be long gone this time around, though, and it looks like we've mainly got a lot of people who like to argue, not stir up trouble just for the sake of stirring up trouble.

But we've got a long way to go.

11. DUers do love to argue
As I said up thread a bit, we're a passionate group when it comes to our politics. It's bound to overflow a bit here and there.

I don't see intentional shitstirring going on so much as some bait and bash stuff that appears to be mostly to vent steam.

However, as you said, we've got a long way to go.

12. I think it was just as awful. It's just started earlier perhaps
due to the hateful, wasteful idiocy of moving up campaigns ever earlier.

It will get a little worse. Enjoy! :D

13. I can handle a little worse
I don't see it as "that" bad really. Not that it's good, but not that bad either. I can handle a little worse, so long as good posters don't begin getting themselves tossed off the board.

My own self-imposed timeouts have kept me from sticking my own foot in my mouth. Well, for the most part anyway. :P

14. That's true. It's a dangerous time for tombstoning.
Best to self-regulate to the very height of one's abilities.
