Gore: Joint attack on climate change and poverty needed, Al Gore tells audience at UN
Joint attack on climate change and poverty needed, Al Gore tells audience at UN

24 September 2007 – A new Marshall Plan is needed to simultaneously tackle global warming and poverty
, the environmental activist and former United States Vice-President Al Gore told an audience at United Nations Headquarters in New York today.

“We now face a global crisis that makes it abundantly clear that increased carbon dioxide emissions anywhere are a threat to the integrity of this planet’s climate everywhere,” Mr. Gore told a luncheon event called “Global Voices on Climate Change.”

The event, hosted by Denmark, Indonesia, Kenya and Poland, was held on the sidelines of the largest-ever gathering of world leaders on climate change.

Increased emissions are responsible for rising temperatures and rising sea levels, which combine to elevate both food and water insecurity worldwide, Mr. Gore said.

“The old divide between North and South, between developed and developing, is now obsolete,” he told the event’s participants, who included 40 heads of State or government, nine deputy prime ministers and vice presidents and 70 cabinet ministers from all over the world.

“We must link poverty reduction with the sharp reduction of carbon dioxide emissions,” he noted, calling for a plan of attack like that of the Marshall Plan, the post-World War II European reconstruction initiative of the US – to tie the struggles against climate change and poverty.

Mr. Gore also urged the completion of the negotiations for creating the successor to the Kyoto Protocol – the current global framework for reducing greenhouse gas emissions which will expire in 2012 – by 2009.

“We simply cannot wait longer,” he said, calling on heads of state to convene meetings every three months until a post-Kyoto treaty is agreed upon.

“We cannot continue business as usual,” he added.

“We cannot continue at a slow pace.”

Mr Gore, if you have what it takes TO BE PRESIDENT of the USA, I will work 24/7 without compensation to bring all of my scientific skills and collaboration know-how to your service.

JUST DO IT, Please.

Thank you,
Bob

7. Yes. I hope our friends in Stockholm honor him
and give him a well deserved boost... There is no one more qualified to lead us out of this mess.

I hate to think of going all the way through the next 30-45 days without an announcement. He's just gotta do it.

6. If gore DOESN'T run, do you think the Dem president would solicit his help?
And do you think Gore would accept?

I posted a thread with this question but it sank. I'm really interested if it might be feasible.

Ideally (!) the Prez would appoint him Global God, or whatever, and hopefully give him pretty much free rein. In the area of climate change and its ramifications, no one is as expert as he.

At this point I'm taking Gore at his word that he won't run, and I'd hate to try to force him if that's his true desire.

But we DO need his expertise and knowledge at a high level.

What do you think??

11. Edwards, Obama, Richardson - yes. That HC person - never.
However, the entire planet needs Gore and I am focused on only one objective - that he is the sworn President of the USA in Jan 2009.

Thank you,
Bob

19. That's right -- I'd forgotten that Gore and that "HC person" aren't particularly
fond of one another.

If he were President, his energies would have to be focused in a myriad of directions. It's precisely because the entire planet needs him that I think if he had the power of the United States backing him, and could focus on the global problems and poverty, he could affect more change more quickly.

And hey -- what about Biden? As far as I know, he's the only one who's mentioned the threat of rising oceans. The others you mention are just talking about greater gas mileage for cars.

14. Gore has said he desires no position in a presidents administration.
Personally, if he's not president, I see no reason for him to work under the many constraints of another president. Particularly one who might be beholden to corporate interests.

20. Point taken, but in my "fantasy" you'll recall I said if he was given free rein.
For example, Biden is the only candidate I've heard even mention the threat of rising oceans while the others are pretty much focused on getting better gas mileage for cars. So let's say the President is a bit more aware -- like Biden -- and realizes that this eclipses corporate interests and popularity polls. I think with the power of the U.S. behind him, Gore could accomplish much more than without.

I heard Madeline Albright talking about being a woman going to the Muslim countries while she was SOS. She said "it's pretty easy to get respect when you land in a big white jet that has United States of America painted on the side".

Ideally such a partnership could benefit the entire world.

I never stop hoping...

31. I don't know. I think Gore already has the world's respect.
But I don't know what he'd decide if he were given freedom to do as he wishes in an administration. I don't know that he would find the offer a believable one.

But he could always quit if it went sour, and become a free agent once again.

33. I agree he already is held in high esteem by the world. I just think if he arrived
in that "big white jet with United States of America" on the side he would receive more coverage.

You're right, he could always quit. I'd like him and President ??? to give it a shot, but as we know, that's just my fantasy. He's such a good guy and has done more than anyone to bring this situation to the fore, I really think we -= the world -- needs his help in a big way.

We'll see!

Thank you for all you do and I hope we find ourselves, and all those whom we cherish, working together to ensure that Al Gore is President in 2009 and that we will set a pattern of ethical, informed leadership that will never devolve to the stupid, cruel, vast tyranny that George Bush and his neoconsters have perpetrated.

25. Can you do those two things at the same time?
Edited on Tue Sep-25-07 10:42 AM by NoMoreMyths
Our impact on the environment is so large because we use more of the energy on the planet in order to create wealth. The more wealth created, the more impact on the environment. Yeah, we can make the impact of each individual person less, but if you add a few billion new people into the equation, what happens? Not only add those new people, but increase the wealth of those already wealthy, AND the new people.

That's the main problem. In our increasing integrated, one-size-fits-all world, once someone has something, it's only fair that everyone gets it. I just don't see how that will negate our impact on the habitat.

If we want everything, there will be consequences. There will be consequences no matter what we do, but the more we decrease poverty, the greater our impact on the environment. If that's what we want, then fine. Take a poll of every person on the planet(even though we'll take their energy away from them, non-humans and the ecosystem won't be voting), and see where we are. If a majority of the 6.5 million+ people want to decrease poverty, then that's the road we'll go down. We just have to be honest with ourselves as we go.
