Larisa Alexandrovna: Was The Right Wing Against Gays Before It Was For It?

Was the right wing against gays before it was for it?

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad caused quite a stir for the right-wing hate constituency. Discussing his extremist views on the topic of homosexuality, Ahmadinejad claimed about Iran "we don't have homosexuals." His latest statement and his general views on the evil of homosexuality are and have been offensive to the left-wing of the international community. Strangely enough, the right wing has suddenly adopted a pro-GLBT stance - if you can imagine - and gathered for a non-stop protest, mass demonstrations against such hate mongering, and all-around general screaming.

"When Ahmadinejad told Columbia today that Iran doesn't have homosexuals, he meant that the theocracy has done its level best to cleanse Iran of gays and lesbians. He also means that they'll get rid of any more they find. Does Columbia support that? If not, why invite the executioner of Iranian homosexuals to speak at their campus?" (Source)

Interestingly, most right-wing bloggers have expressed this same exact view and have rightfully condemned the anti-gay sentiment, even going as far as locating footage of executed gay men in Iran, but they don't seem to see their similar extremism and hate against the GLBT community in the US.

Noting why there are no gays in Iran, one blogger notes:

"It's because they're trying to kill them all. These are two gay teenagers who were kept in a cage, publicly humiliated, gruesomely hung, and left to dangle in front of the macabre crowd. That way they could serve as a warning to anyone who would dare be homosexual in Iran's Islamic utopia" (Source) NOTE: GRAPHIC Images

Seriously, the anti-gay rhetoric got much more attention from the right-wing blogs than other, equally bizarre comments made by the Iranian president.

Obviously I am rather amazed at this sudden transformation and interest in human rights and gay rights all of a sudden. Let's have a look back and examine the subtle and the extreme anti-gay sentiments expressed by the right-wing:

"But Al Gore -- total fag." - Bestselling conservative author, Anna Coulter

“Whatever four members of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts may say, the intimate coupling of two men or two women is not marriage. It is a pale and misshapen counterfeit that will only serve to empty marriage of its meaning and destroy the institution that is the keystone in the arch of civilization. … If homosexuals win the right to ‘marry,’ expect further similarly argued claims challenging legal barriers to polygamy, bestiality, and child marriage.” - Popular Conservative Pastor and founder of Coral Ridge Church, D. James Kennedy

"From the beginning when I founded Operation Rescue, the vision was not solely to end child-killing; the vision was to recapture the power bases of America, for child- killing to be the first domino, if you will, to fall in a series of dominoes. My feeling was, and still is, once we mobilize the momentum, the manpower, the money, and all that goes with that to make child-killing illegal, we will have sufficient moral authority and moral force and momentum to get the homosexual movement back in the closet, to get the condom pushers in our schools to be back on the fringes of society where they belong where women are treated with dignity, not as Playboy bunnies, etc., etc. We want to recapture the country, because right now the country's power bases are in the hands of a very determined, very evil elite who are selling us a bill of goods." - Operation Rescue founder, Randall Terry

- snip -

"State Universities are breeding grounds, quite literally, for sexually transmitted diseases (including HIV), homosexual behavior, unwanted pregnancies, abortions, alcoholism, and drug abuse." - Founder of Focus on the Family and "loyal Bushie," James Dobson

"Homosexuality is Satan's diabolical attack upon the family that will not only have a corrupting influence upon our next generation, but it will also bring down the wrath of God upon America. " - Founder of Liberty University (where Bush DOJ appointees come from), Jerry Falwell

"I want to coin a phrase here, and I don't mind help. What would be the communication version of "ethnic cleansing?" Because that's what in particular the homosexual activists try to do." - Nationally syndicated conservative columnist and radio-show host, psychologist, Dr. Laura Schlessinger, who also has frequently called homosexuals "deviant” and homosexuality a “biological error”

“When lawlessness is abroad in the land, the same thing will happen here that happened in Nazi Germany. Many of those people involved in Adolph Hitler were Satanists. Many of them were homosexuals. The two things seem to go together.” - Popular host of 700 Club and friend of President George W. Bush, Pat Robertson

- snip -

"Oh, you're one of the sodomites. You should only get AIDS and die, you pig. How's that? Why don't you see if you can sue me, you pig. You got nothing better than to put me down, you piece of garbage. You have got nothing to do today, go eat a sausage and choke on it." - Conservative Radio Host, Michael Savage

Remember, these are the people that helped get the Bush administration into office on a platform of hate, which was defended by the party leadership and its followers. Now tell me why there is no wall to wall coverage of the extremism of the American version of Ahmadinejad and why are the masses not out in protest? Clearly there appears to be a connection between the hate of one group (gays) being extended to other groups (Jews, liberals, etc.). Hate mongers just cannot help themselves but hate anyone and everyone different from themselves. But these people are called the "moral values" crowed and are easily supported by the current outraged "no gays in Iran" contingent.

Sadly, the reality is that like with all of the pro-war talking points, this latest faux outrage has nothing to do with gays. It is simply yet another example of how basic human rights are exploited for party talking points by an extremist political view-point that does not recognize itself in the reflection of its avowed enemy.
